2013 Randonnees

2013 Randonnees

The 2013 Randonneuring season began on November 1, so if you're riding randonnees this year, tell us about them.

Are you riding a Super Randonneur series with the hopes of getting into a 1200K randonnee later this year? Or are you just riding the randonnees for the fun, challenge, adventure, etc.?

I'm not getting into a 1200, but I'm hoping to complete the series this year, having not had a whole lot of experience doing distance. Anyway, the Ohio randonneur club is where I'm hoping to get my miles. The first 200 is in March - I plan on being there.

looking forward to another Eastern PA SR series. Also Endless Mountains 1240k.

Somehow talked myself into riding "Crush the Commonwealth," which isn't really a brevet, but it's 600k.

Yeah, it's a race (technically). A few people do treat it as such. Me? - not so much. It will give you the extra little bit of motivation you need to stay semi-fit all winter. It's is a cruel time of year for a 640K race in this part of the world, and it's two weeks earlier than typical (starts on April 19th this year). I haven't gotten over 150 outdoor miles this month, so I have been spanking Igor a whole lot (ahem...that means I have been riding my mag trainer).

We (San Diego) have a pretty good schedule for this year. The usual spring series plus a 1000, some lovely 2 and 300's over the summer. We'll finish the year strong with my two favorite 200k routes. Bring your climbing legs and your camera.

The Audax UK season nows runs 1 October to 30 September. So far, 200s each month except December and possibly 2 x 200 in January; the first brevet of 2013 is this weekend. Hopefully it'll be dry and not too cold.

The Texas Rando Stampede is pretty darn early in the year, May 1-4, so I'll at ride a century, a 300, a 400 and then a 200 prior to it. I'd like to attempt a 600 but it's something like 2-3 weeks prior to the 1200. I'm not sure I can attempt it and then attempt a 1200.

There's a flèche on our schedule. if i can complete these, i think that I only need a Populaire to qualify for the RUSA Cup. That could be an issue since the closest one appear to be in San Diego.

I'm packed up and ready to leave for Cincinnati early in the morning for a 200k solo permanent. It should be mid-50's when I start, high of 65, and barely below 60 when I finish. Chance of rain all day, but for January in the Midwest I can't complain.

Assuming I finish this will be 2 down, 10 to go toward my first R-12.

Excited

I haven't done any long rides since moving to the west coast and for a couple of years. I'm looking forward this year to doing the Seattle to Portland ride with some friends from Portland and then your Sunset Beach and Pines to Cactus brevets. I'm thinking those three rides will also be different enough in terrain and scenery to make for unique and interesting experiences.

I think Permanents may not count in Machka's definition of Randonnee, but regardless, I'm so glad that I currently live where I do, instead of NW Illinois -- partially due to the weather difference, but also due to the following:

If I count correctly, there are eight (8) 200+ km Permanents that start within a 22-mile bike ride from where I currently sit. Four of those start within 6-miles from here, and another 2 start within 10-miles from here. I've ridden to the start of 7 of them.

8 routes, 5 different route-organizers. I'm pretty sure I counted correctly.

I have also ridden to the start of some of the local Brevets / Randonnees. The Raleigh series rides all start in Morrisville, which is a 15-mile bike ride from where I sit.

======================================================

There are actually ten (10) 200+ km permanents that start within that 22-mile "circle". I forgot about the two that start in Durham.

when I lived in the mountains of Virginia, I used to be jealous of people who lived in North Carolina, particularly in the winter. What a perfect place to ride.

Have given the occasional thought to retiring there. I'm not particularly interested in places like Florida because I would miss the mountains

Had a successful 200k, 300k, and 400k last year. Would like to add a 600k (and perhaps a fixed 200k) to the list this year.

Just to pile-on: I'm still sitting in the same place and there are ten (10) perm-pops of 102 to 140 kms that start within that same 22-mile "circle". I've ridden seven (7) of them -- one route was only created last month, and I just haven't had the opportunity to ride my own "new" creation, yet.

I'm just joined RUSA a few months ago and am hoping to ride my first brevet this season. I've done a few centuries before but never anything much longer than 100 miles at one time. Looking to start with a 200 -- either Boston, NYC/Princeton, or Long Island, NY...any recommendations on which of those locations would be best for a first-timer?

Yesterday I rode an enjoyable 200k with the Harpath Bike Club out of Nashville TN. The 4+ hour drive down was made worthwhile by a great ride and friendly Tennessee randonneurs and motorists. Wild daffodils were blooming everywhere, the day was partly sunny with the high in the 50s, and the hills were challenging but not overwhelming.

3 down 9 to go for my first R-12.

Another 200k permanent in Ohio today. Cold and rainy for the first 10 minutes, then sunny, then cold and overcast, then windy. Typical midwest March day. The course passes very near the start point (thus my vehicle) with 20 miles to go. Cruel and/or character building.

I did two 200's last year and want to add 300 and 400 this year. The first scheduled 200 is two weeks away and I haven't even had my road bike out yet because of this stuff.

The 2013 Raleigh Region Brevet Season starts tomorrow. 0700 start. 200-kms.

The plan for me is: ride 15-miles to the start. do the brevet. socialize some at the finish. ride 15-miles back.

If I succeed: instant 300k training. (300k in two weeks)
If I don't succeed: still instant 300 trainiing.

==================================================

Oh, I forgot: talk to RBA Alan to find out if he has figured out the 300k detour around the bridge that is being replaced. If he has, get him to e-mail the detour so I can make a RWGPS for the 300 with which he can replace the current Trimble map (without the detour).

Interesting thing about the possible detour routes: all are longer than the intended route, but all have less gross climbing.

Well ... I finished. I wasn't what I expected, and I had previously done that route five times as a 200 (and another five times as part of longer brevets). But the day was gorgeous -- despite the headwind the entire way back.

https://irregularveloadventures.blogs...km-brevet.html

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit 2013/04/29:

"I wasn't what I expected" -- that was supposed to be: "It wasn't what I expected".

However, I think the slip to "I" instead of "It" may have been more appropriate.

Cool windy day for a 200k brevet with the Ohio Randonneurs. The forecast called for a high of 56 with 20-30 mph winds; I don't think it got that warm. Much of the day was crosswinds, with some headwind stretches thrown in for variety. We had some echelons going for a while, which was kind of cool. Fortunately it finished with about 20 miles of tailwinds. Seven of us finished together at 8:30 ET, which is respectable for me.

The last time I did this route, two years ago, there was snow along the road and someone suffered from hypothermia. A bit better this year!

I did my first 200 of the year today, the previous two events were cancelled due to atrocious weather. The weather was quite good, but long sleeves, tights and shoe covers were still a must. The Sugoi Hydrolite rain jacket I got last week made an excellent wind breaker and seemed to breathe well.

There were some crazy temperature variations today depending on how much snow was in the surrounding fields. Towards the end the temperature began dropping rapidly. Then when we reached the industrial area on the outskirts of the city it jumped up what felt like at least 6C.

Next Saturday I'll be doing my first 300.

NCBC 300k Brevet was Apr-20th.
Interesting ride.
Less interesting ride report: https://irregularveloadventures.blogs...km-brevet.html

Noting "gecho's" above comments on the conditions for his 200 -- makes me laugh at myself about getting COLD when the temp dropped to about 47F after sunset. However, I wasn't dressed for anything below about 55F. However, in the "stuff that works" category: putting a bread-bag over each hand and lower arm blocked enough wind that I was much warmer from that (also, the "heat sink" referred to in the blog report helped -- not sure which was more effective).

Welp, I've signed up for my first 200K. The Lake Champlain 200K out of Burlington, VT. It looks like a beautiful route, there's a convenient bail-out at 90miles if something goes wrong, and there's also a 300K sharing the start/finish that day so I won't feel bad about making the finish volunteers wait if I'm the last one in off the 200K because the fast 300K folks will just be starting to trickle in.
