Someone explain to me these handlebar bags that I keep seeing

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

People putting Gatorskins (or any frozen hose of a tire) on $10k+ megasuperbikes will always be the benchmark of What? Why?! for me, so a handlebar bag (regardless of size) doesn't even come close.

I doubt that kind of bag even makes that much drag based on where it's located. Half the rider's mass is up above it, getting in the wind anyway.

Don't care, just wonder why they do it.

I have a serious problem with bags like this: they don't work with Shimano 9-speed cables.

Nomadic Millenials in search of experiences.

We used to call them Hippies and the discipline was called Touring. We even had a forum here for that but the marketing departments at all the brands didn't want these guys knowing their forefathers used to do all this in sandals and jorts (we used to just call them cut off jeans) as it wasn't new or edgy enough so...we get "Adventure" cycling.

It's this generation's camel back or fanny pack.

They work with that bag. You might need longer housing/cables to go around the bag however.

Edited to add pic. I ran pretty long housing when I built this bike, just in case I ever need a larger bag.

Thanks! Then I believe that Apidura would work on our tandem for touring even with the aero bars. Nice.

Hey Jorge! Yes, it's been a really long time!

I never stopped cycling was just out of the scene for a long time. Normally get in my 2 hours from 5-7AM on the road. Commuting by bike helped me keep decent fitness over the years.

I did go out to 9W a few times this year but it's not the same anymore. I miss the epic battles on 9W! Now it's all Rapha, Instagram Disc Brakes. Nobody seems to really "ride" anymore, they pose.

I switch this year for both my road bike and gravel bike and love it. Only a fool would cram a rain shell, wallet, phone, food into a jersey and then judge someone for utilizing such an elegant solution. You can tell it is a practical solution when the old school Luddites come out and start attacking people for doing it.

+1 And good jerseys have big pockets that don't permanently stretch when you stuff them.

My best jerseys ever - there was a run of Mavic bright orange spring/fall jerseys with a lot of silver reflecting fabric that went on sale for $29.29 because the zippers were garbage. I bought 4. Took them to the local drycleaner and had them put in quality outdoor zippers I found. $5/zipper, $30 sewing.

Those jerseys can be loaded like a backpack and they don't care. Big, easy to reach pockets. Fully comfortable fully loaded. Good as an outside jersey from close to freezing to 75F and wearable to 85F.

No front pockets? I’m sure you’re old enough to remember those!

Yeah, commuting was great for getting the miles in when you have a busy schedule. You can structure training in there as well depending on how long your commute is. While I like to think I miss riding into the city, I don't really since I just make my way north to 9W and it's mainly trees and deer.

As for the epic battles, yeah those were some great rides. I remember one of the trips to Bear Mountain was essentially an impromptu race to and from.

Lunch, extra water, snacks, cell phone, wallet, face mask, extra pair of glasses, rain jacket... sometimes we're not all out there to just hammer.

Its perhaps overkill, but calling it stupid is pretty lame.
There are a ton of different ways to skin this cat, just be OK with that.
