40 Years Ago: March 1980 in Bicycling magazine
For this look back at 40 years ago, I've included an eclectic mix of articles and ads including "Beating Europe's Best" (introducing Selectocam), "Selecting, Placing, and Installing Cleats", and "This Congressman Promotes (Glenn Anderson, CA)".
I'm still scratching my head over "Beating Europe's Best". A better title might have been "US Cyclists Get Lucky in Europe", but you'd think it was about something entirely different. Actually, this article begs for a "What's Your Title?" contest.
The articles about alignment and cold-setting will be included in an upcoming Frames and Framebuilding post.
A couple of articles from this issue were posted previously:
https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...nwheelers.html
https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...railleurs.html
As usual, let me know if you'd like to see something else listed in the ToC and I'll do my best to send you a pdf.
Just send me a PM that includes your email address.

Thanks for sharing. The Rhode Gear ad was interesting. It let's today's youngsters know what those old Flickstands are for, and the proper installation! BTW, $4.50 wasn't cheap back then!

Should I mention what I paid for a set of Phil Wood bubs back in '76-77? I built both wheels with those Phil hubs, narrow alloy 36h 27" clincher rims and stainless butted spokes for under $100... That was half of what I had paid for my whole bike (the Fuji S-10S)...

That congressman's bars are creeping towards hobo fit.
...but he has an awesome horn, so that almost offsets the bars.
