40 years from now, what will the person disassembling your bike say?

Sometimes, less 'some' and more 'times', I have choice words for the previous owners and mechanics that assembled and "serviced" my bikes. What would the next generation say if your bikes sat in a shed unused for 40 years and your progeny sold them off for $20.

I try to grease all threads, stem and seatpost during assembly, not take shortcuts, use the right parts and keep my bikes dry. I am sure they would wonder why I used cheap, ugly m520 pedals and question why I replaced some of the very damaged hand painted decals with stickers on my Raleigh pro. Also they might wonder about these cheap sunrace freewheels.

Is that ebay handlebar tape???

I think there’s been a consensus that any professional that’s working on anything I’ve worked on says something like “awwww. You tried so hard, lil’ slugger- but you’ll get it next time.”

If it is my road bike I think they'd say "Well-chosen group and well-executed build, except he should have made the rear brake cable housing a half-inch longer."

If it is my mountain bike I think they'd say "Sweet Mother McCree, he was a bit addled, wasn't he?"

If the bike is still functional, fixable, and worth it 40 years later, must have done something right.

"Wow, this 1960 Paramount is 100 years old, and it looks to be just as nice and probably as fast as it was then. Again, why do folks buy those hideous 'new' bikes? These vintage 531 bikes made before 1988 are where it's at. And they're so easy to tune!"

I don't have to wait 40 years, as they are giving me their thoughts already: "it isn't electric?"

Nice try framesavering, but next time use two or three bottles instead of one and use a fiber-optic camera to check your work because your coverage wasn't total.

Good job protecting the decals though. A slice of heavy-duty leaf bag covered with helicopter tape did the job, nice work there. And stealthed your bike, I wasn't sure what was under there ...
