Biked down to the beach, meeting my girlfriend who has driven the car down. Put my Domane on the bike rack. Came back an hour later to find this
Someone was clearly walking by with an umbrella or whatever and ran into my handlebars, gouging the tape. My bike is like two months old. No note, nuthin. I taped it up with electrical tape, but clearly I'm going to need new bar tape.

I'm pissed off. If someone had done equivalent damage to a car, they might have at least left a note of apology.

Was this in the Hamptons, or Bestchester county? If so, good manners are hard to find during the summer, or most anytime. In short - there is very little accountability.

I'm going to go ahead and generalize here and say that people are selfish dicks. I've had my car damaged twice while parked with the other driver leaving no note. And that's not to mention the countless door dings that have riddled both sides of my poor vehicle.

Fortunately, your frame wasn't damaged and tape is cheap and easy to replace.

Not limited to bicycles. I'm sure everyone on BF has a story about someone damaging something of theirs and not leaving a note or taking responsibility. Someone ripped the mirror off my truck about 2 weeks ago. I've had people bash their doors into my truck in a parking lot, while I was in it.

Several times a day I find myself thinking "People suck."

Crappy about your bike. At least the bike was still there, and the damage wasn't worse (if you're trying to find a bright side).

I cant believe you left that bike at the beach! Bummed about the damage but happy it is only minor. People do suck though, that is for sure.

They respect bikes a lot after they have taken them away from you. That bike should be stored and carried in the trunk of the car, model permitting.

Lol. This was in Sagaponack NY, last I heard THE wealthiest zip code in the USA. The car on the left was a Bentley coupe, the one on the right some higher-end Porsche. That they let riff-raff like me in with a measly $3500 bike on a 2008 Volvo is astonishing. (However, I'm not a total moron: there was a cable lock on the bike.)


Yes, I get the people are all ********, but I can't help feeling, given the amount of money down there, similar damage to a car would have been handled more graciously. Y'all clearly disagree, but more than once, people I know have come back to find notes on their cars after damage had been done in, say, a parking lot.

That cable lock slows a thief about 2 seconds. They don't look for nice bikes in bad neighborhoods.

How do you keep your bike safe? I've always figured cable locks were worthless, so I just prefer to never leave my bike outside my house/vehicle.

Wait a minute - you're suggesting that HE is mostly anus? Look in a mirror. You started a thread with a rant because someone put a half inch nick in your handlebar tape that can easily be repaired with about 6 inches of electrical tape. You probably shouldn't ride that bike, as the wear and tear on it might be even more damaging to the bar tape, or you might even wear out the chain over time.

Chances are, whomever did this probably didn't even realize that they did - while lugging a bunch of beach supplies from the parking lot to the beach.

BTW, you can get perfectly good bar tape on ebay for about $2-3 a set.

Yeah, they're pretty overwhelming. Some oceanfront "compound" just went for like 200 mil last year. (Which is a lot for your money compared to a 155 mil penthouse in Manhattan! ) The money there is just brain-frying.

I did notice that no one ran their beach gear into the Bentley or the Porsche on either side of our Volvo. Probably just a coincidence? Or maybe they were just more careful when walking by a $350,000 car?
