Why is road cycling so political and middle class?

Good luck to your kiddo!

I dont see the problem. I am by far a better cyclist than anyone out there. My bike is way hotter than anyone elses. And my kit is maximum coolness. Everyone else cycling is failing big time. In fact most cyclists I encounter are fake cyclists.

Oh look ... the first "they didn't wave at me" thread of the season!!
The imagination is an amazing thing.
Focus on your own ride ... stop imagining what people are thinking of you. Most of the time no one sees you ... no one notices you ... no one is paying any attention to you at all ... no one cares.

Your advice, however, is good, especially the part about "no one cares." Go ride, do your thing, and enjoy the ride.
BTW, I am certain that most, if not, all of these stories should be filed under "fake news."

You all realise, don't you, that this thread is 3 years old.

Kiddo should have a good time. He is not doing the ITT, rather TTT. We don't expect much, but I think the TTT is a great collegiate event.

Yeah, the leg out is a track thing (did Rossi start this? I think it might come out of dirt riding). Don't think it's regional because I've never seen anybody "wave" that way on the street anywhere.

I saw this in the countryside too, mostly France. I was on a BMW R - definitely not a track bike.
Didn't see it on the Motorways or Autobahn

It is cool. IIRC, Marian University was pretty dominant back when I was racing. Haven't kept up on it lately.
Collegiate is funny... the guy who won the D1 road race in '14 was a 31 year old med student and a former pro. Gotta love it when the NCAA isn't involved.

In any case I think that leg waving is a bourgeois--and, by extension, middle class--thing to do, don't you? But, maybe not in France, in which case it would be somewhat more proletarian.

I thought motorcyclists in this country do the "low hand" acknowledgement? Would the leg thing be considered rude by a Harley rider?

MSU Cycling Team - About Us
Don't let the pictures of the campus fool you. That area can be a bleak, desolate place to live/exist. If you are a cycling nut maybe you should do the HH100 one time. I know you have some BF buddies in the North Texas area. Go down and do that ride. It will give you a greater appreciation for the scenery/terrain/weather you have in VA.

Yeah--generally, the low-hand thing. I ride a sport bike so getting a response from any Harley rider is a hit or miss--usually miss-thing. I don't know what would happen if I extended my leg out toward on oncoming Harley rider and I really don't want to find out, either.

My last post in that thread is telling. On the same course, same distance the top 16 for the Pro, 1, 2 race finished 3 min apart, while the collegiate As finished 22 min apart.
I started that thread after my realization that *some* collegiate setups are better than some pro-licensed rider setups. There is overlap where best collegiate riders, get more compensation (school, board, room, transportation, all race equipment and fees and allowance), than the paying to play USAC pro teams. And they are as good.

It is "funny". I think you know it was discussed a lot here: https://www.bikeforums.net/33-road-bi...pro-racer.html

If you are looking at colleges for your son and can endure the Baptist way of life, it might be a place to look at. Falwell U is rolling in the dough. Beautiful campus, beautiful area and a great place to ride bikes.
