Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

R8000 SPD-SL Carbon Road Pedals-Clipping In

Trouble Clipping In
I really like my new R8000 pedals when riding, but the problem I have is when starting. I have trouble getting the pedal right side up so I can clip in. This is really frustrating when traveling in downtown areas with frequent stop and go. Any tips or tricks for handling these. Appreciate any advice, thanks Pierre.

It’s a little strange to hear this, because I’ve found the SPD-SL pedals to be the easiest single sided pedals to use.

Try using a more forward sweeping motion motion to engage the pedal.

Flip it over from the back with your toes. Practice and it will be easy.

These are my first single sided pedals. I was use to the double sided before this.

Just keep practicing. After awhile, flipping it over with your toe will be automatic.

It will get easier with practice and you won't even think about it.

My advice: Forget what you learned about clipping into double sided pedals. SPD-SL require a toe-first clip in, not a straight downward motion like SPD. If you try to stomp in, you'll have a really hard time of it. Point your toe at the pedal and engage the front of the cleat then let the natural motion of the pedal pivot it into place as you push down.
