Issue installing braze-on Simplex SLJ shifters

Hello all, I hope you all are well, so I purchased some Simplex retrofriction shifters for my 1985 Schwinn Voyageur and figured it would be a simple install, but the braze-on for the shifters will not accomodate the Simplex shifters. I was under the impression that all the downtube shifter brazeons were the same, so I was taken aback when I realized I couldn't install them. Given my shifter braze-ons, would it be possible to use these shifters? I apprecieate any insights on the matter.

I’m on my phone- but google “Shimano B Boss”

Also- are your shifters from clamp on shifters?

Yeah, that extra hickey was Shimano’s attempt at a new standard. I successfully carefully filed that square bit off a frame once.

Ah, I see now. Thanks for enlightening me on that matter. I wasn't aware Shimano had deviated from the standard shifter boss design at one point. I wish I knew that going into this.

No these shifters aren't the clamp on variant, so they should have fit if the shifter boss' were they not the non-proprietary Shimano shifter boss'.

Before you get to work filing...
some Simplex shifters used a different pitch thread... not all metric is the same...
test, don’t guess
double check the needed boss length (depth into the shifter mech )

As you can see, the Retrofriction shifter needs a square base to interface with so it won't just spin around when you operate the levers. Make sure you file down the round base in a way that you will end with flats to interface with the flats on theshallow square box on the shifter.

That's a Shimano "A-type" boss; the Simplex levers are designed to fit on Campagnolo-type bosses. Shimano used to offer a conversion kit (part #680 9858) to mount Campagnolo-type levers onto the A-type boss, but you still needed to replace the lever fixing bolts, as the A-type boss uses 4.5mm x 0.75mm thread, while the Campagnolo-type boss uses 5mm x 0.8mm thread.
