Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Per the jokes from that picture, I'd think you'd all defer to my fashion sense.

Not to derail too much, but FSA cranks look a ton better than the latest DA offering. Hideous.

The one thing you're guaranteed to take away from any "best" discussion on this forum...confusion and a plethora of conflicting opinions...

Go with a set of customs... Psimet builds a great wheel.

Don't think you could go wrong with Boyd, Soul, November, or Williams

I did quite a bit of research and did not find many bad reviews. In fact, the amount of great reviews is the reason why I got them (price as well).

agreed, I did a lot of reading on them. I was extremely confident getting these at my LBS because of all the different ites with great reviews. also, my LBS liked them a lot and sold quite a few. They have no issues with them.

Why has no one mentioned Yishun carbon wheels? I got this forum's emailed "May Dealsletter" with a 5% off coupon from Yishun. Are they a sponsor here, are they a "recommended vendor?" Are their wheels any good? The prices sure look nice.

Yet the Vueltas are slightly lighter for a third of the price. If money is no object (as it appears to be), I guess November is your choice. There is a case to be made for hand-spun custom wheels, but not at 3X the price.

Just basing this on the word 'value' in the Title of this thread.

But the Vueltas are not carbon fiber. I am hoping to take out some bumpiness of the road with these 50mm November clincers. Plus, let's be honest, the November clinchers look 30x better.

It is hard to say what is the "best" wheelset because so much of what makes a wheelset great for a rider is dependent on so many variables. Thse variables differ from one roder to the next.

Fulcrum Racing Zero Competition Ltd. Ed. work great in my C59.

For the Infinito, Campy Eurus are perfect.

For the Bottecchia, Ambrosio Excellence 32H wheels bring out the natural springiness of a Columbus SLX frame.

So it really all depends.

I know this may not be helpful, but wheels are so much a matter of personal preference that generalized advice might not be very helpful.

Sure, but you're getting damn near the aero of 404FC for the price of a 404FC front. That's also serious value.

I cannot tell you how the conflicting characteristics balance out, but the damping properties of CF are offset by the very deep profile. Natural flex of a low profile aluminum rim could easily be more shock absorbing than the CF characteristics modified by deep profile. If you want CF wheels for comfort mainly, you should go with a lower profile like 38 mm or less.

If your carbon frame and carbon fork have not taken enough road buzz out of your ride, methinks you are spending needlessly.

To each their own.

If it's to mute road buzz and harsher bumps, go for good quality tires and tubes, probably 25mm width and lower your pressure. If you weigh 145 pounds and are running 100+ psi in your tires, that is too high. I am 135 pounds right now and run about 80/90 psi in 23mm tires front/rear and that is probably a little too far on the high side.

If I just had $1500 to throw away on new wheels, I'd get another set of Fulcrum Racing Zero or Campagnolo Shamal. They just feel so easy to accelerate to me, great for when the attacks start on the competitive group ride. I would consider Hed Ardennes just to try something different.

What is a high quality tube? I just bought some Michelin Pro 4s.

Edit: Also, why ride at 80 psi? Wouldn't that just increase ground contact and slow you down?

OP, what width tire and PSI (front and rear) are you at?

Also, in addition to tires, a good fit and proper saddle and cockpit set up can do more to minimize the effects of road buzz than wheels, too.

23mm and exactly 100 psi (I pump to 100 if it's not before I ride) for both tires.
