Hi from NYC
Hi everyone!
I just got a new road bike, and old find, for running small errands and getting to work if that will be allowed anytime in the future.
Hope everyones having a great weekend!

Its going well thanks! I got a used bike recently and figured I would join to learn more about the bike and figure out what if any kind of accessories I might be able to get for it. How's it going with you?

Hi Crisspen,
If it wasn’t raining, I’d probably be in the saddle right now. The only reason I ever venture outside now is to ride haha. Weather permitting, I am doing a minimum of twenty or thirty miles a day.
Was officially furloughed this weekend, tho, so I might be logging more miles soon.
Not super sure yet. I may also be getting out of the city for the Jersey Shore soon. So that may affect my riding too.
Things have been nutty lately but I don’t have to tell you or anyone else that.
How’re things in Astoria? My grandmother is living there with my uncle and his family.
They say they’re fine in quarantine but I wouldn’t mind your two cents on the situation.
What kinda cycling you getting in over there?

Sorry to hear you are furloughed man, I guess you can at least claim unemployment insurance though right? This crisis is pretty damaging to so many and in so many ways. I hope you're not too disrupted by it all.
Astoria, is great! I love it, always have. I hope it doesn't change too much on me.

Hi Crisspen, welcome. I'd recommend a cable bike lock so they can only steal your saddle (I've seen so many stripped frames anchored to a parking meter in Manhattan!) Ride safe and act as though all the cars are driven by lunatics with vision challenges.

That is good advice, I have seen many of those bikes myself. I have a U-lock and a cable do you think that will suffice? I was also thinking of getting the NYC Kryptonite U-Lock since its graded for NYC or whatever.
I was also thinking of getting a mirror. But that seems like a theft risk or an unnecessary accessory.

Welcome crisppen Congrats on your bike purchase. You came to the right community. I hope we get to hear more about your experience.
Thank you! @assad000003
I took my first bike ride from Queens into Brooklyn yesterday and I have to say it was really great. The weather was cool I worked up a little sweat and I got pretty far. It was a great break from quarantine.

Hi Crisppen, here's a photo to show where a plastic-coated wire rope would go through all the stealable bits. Then once round the nearest parking meter, etc, with as little slack as possible to stop someone lifting the whole thing bodily. Most thieves are opportunists, so as long as it looks like it would be hard to steal they'll most likely go on to an easier mark. Having given up my life of crime I am rusty on this and there may be others with better ideas. Anyone?

Mirror
About a mirror! Not a bad idea especially if it makes you and your bike a bit unstable when looking over your shoulder. Jut a little thing that clamps on the handlebar on the left, or plugs into the bar end. A friend of mine (not me, really) has a tiny dentist-mirror size thing on a stalk sticking out of his helmet. Most sophisticated . . .

I mentioned plastic coated wire rope or cable as Crisppen mentions above - the sort that is attached to a padlock - not an actual piece of nylon rope! The pictures were to show where to thread it. Oh my . . .

I like this idea very much actually. I'm just not sure what size of a chain or wire chain I would need in order to get it through all those little holes. I am going to buy another u-lock as Ive seen those used together. I may not use them both all the time but the one that I have not is not big enough to get through the frame, tire and a bike post. I will get one that is slightly bigger I think.

Hi there Crisppen, you might consider a cable that can work with your bike lock instead of a separate cable lock. See this one from Amazon, for example, $14 plus tax: https://www.amazon.com/Titanker-6-5F...8-3&th=1&psc=1
