Can one install a Syncro II insert without the special tool from Campy??

I got a replacement insert for my Syncro II shutterbug I'm not ready to spend on the special installation tool fro m Campy cause the dang thing's quite expensive. Anyone here replace their inserts without the tool? How did I you do it??

My shifter accidentally came apart once 30 years ago, and I believe I put it back together by having only one spring in, pushing the insert hard sideway into that spring and then inserting the other spring with needlenose pliers. But I could be wrong. You may also try using a small blade or shim to slide the insert over the spring after getting the other side started (both springs starting in place).

I recall that I couldn't do it on the side of the road (rode home on friction), but I got it back together without too much struggle at home. If a 17 year old could figure it out, you'll be fine.

Here you go:

I often wonder if Campy comes up with these tools before or after they design their components.
Quite expensive out there and I think it's mostly made out of plastic (Delrin?)

From the day Synchros were first available I've only done it by hand. Spring, insert, spring.

^ +1. Like many other tools it facilitates the process but isn't mandatory. Invaluable in an Italian LBS setting, where the mechanic had one too many Cinzano at lunch.

I’ve done it three or four times using a small flat tip screwdriver and a dip into my bag of expletives.

I also did it several times without the tool.
I didn't even knew there was a tool until a few years ago.
