Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best Value Wheels?

Hi, I am looking to upgrade my wheels on my CAAD10 with 10 speed ultegra. Currently I have the stock wheels on them, which are the Mavic Aksium WTS.

I am looking for the best value in terms of money for less weight + great durability. I am not looking to go to extreme price points to shave off weight. Rather, I want to hit the sweet spot where money returns the most benefit.

- Looking to spend less than roughly $1,500
- Weight: 145 lbs

Thanks for replies in advance.

Dura Ace C24 9000, custom, etc. At that price point, you have a lot of options. A great all around wheels = C24 9000

Zipp 101s or any of the HED ardennes models would be well within your budget.

$1500 is way beyond the inflection point of any cost.benefit curve for wheels.

So basically you can't screw it up even if you tried.

Exactly. Get a set of Vuelta Corsa Superlites. 1460g, about $400. You can't beat that. Save your money.

I'm going to sound like a broken record, but I just ordered a set of November Rails, and they should be fantastic and just in your budget. Otherwise, the options everyone else said.

Actually, you can go for about 1/3rd your budget and get Boyd Vitesse or Zen Cyclery Katmandu, which use the same rim, and get the convenience of aluminum while being well lighter than your current wheels.

The best bang for your buck, IMO, is the second build listed from White Mountain Wheels: https://whitemountainwheels.com/SampleBuilds.html

Ron is a great wheel builder. You will not be disappointed.

Vuelta Corsa have really bad reviews because the freehub just breaks appart after a couple thousand miles. I'd stay away from it after what I read...

Reading and riding are two different things. I've owned ridden Cosra HD, Starlite and ZeroLite, all with great results.

71 reviews, 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Vuelta Corsa SLRs from Nashbar? I have a couple thousand on mine and they have been very robust thus far. Freehub has been reliable and quite frankly the mechanism sounds very strong. Hit some pretty nasty potholes on unfamiliar roads and seldom ever needed truing. Vuelta or whatever overseas company makes them names their wheels very similarly which can be confusing. Maybe you aren't thinking of the same wheel.

I'm going to need a link to back this up after all of the positive reviews on Vuelta wheels. Just ordered a set of the Corsa Lites last night as a matter of fact.

Yes, I would prefer carbon wheels. I hear they dampen the bumps on the road. My CAAD10 is quite stiff so I'm looking for something to make my ride a little smoother. Not sure if aluminum will do that...

If 1,500 is too much, where is the inflection point?

Mavic Ksyrium SLRs? A touch over $1,500 MSRP but I bet you could find a pair on sale at your price. From my experience all of the Ksyrium line is smooth and stays true, but I haven't tried the carbon rimed ones though.

I don't think it makes that much of a difference in ride quality. Tires on the other hand will. But if it makes you happy to spend that much then just buy the C50 you listed earlier. Those are great wheels.

The reviews are not particularly representative of normal wheel pros and cons. All aluminum freehubs for Shimano compatible cassettes are grooved by old Shimano cassettes if a protective spacer or clip kit is not used. The spacer makes sure that the cassette is really torqued down tight so it doesn't move back and forth and dig into the freehub body. A new set of rim tape is no big deal if that is all it takes to fix a problem. These are very good wheels for the price. But you can do pretty well also if you want some better customer service with basic aluminum rims and a semi-custom brand like Boyd, November, or Psimet. I never hear any complaints about them.
