Virtual Eroica Weekend

With this year's Eroica off the calendar for now, I thought it would be fun to start a virtual Eroica thread, if anybody feels like gathering and sharing in a safe and socially distant way. Please post pictures of either past year's activity, or even better, the bikes and interesting riding kits you planned to ride this year. Detailed bike shots would be great to see too, maybe a little history of your bike. Toe clips are optional. 😉

Last year, me and the Legnano Roma, ready for its second Eroica. I got this bike new, in 1964, been riding it ever since.

Ready to roll, 2019.

With friends at the lighthouse break.

Got out for a short spin yesterday on last years Eroica ride with my wife. Bike path was full of people trying to take advantage of the great weather and probably bored of staying home...distancing.

Realized as we were heading home, that had things gone as planned, we would have been in the car traveling to Cambria.

Post Eroica ‘19 Heroic route shot of the dirty bike, and also one of me (right) and a friend enjoying a post ride beer.

Yesterday my friend Rick and I did a 34 mile non-Eroica pre-ride, around the San Fernando Valley. Rick actually did more miles, riding from home over Santa Susana Pass. I rode the '73 Super Course that I was hoping to do the hilly medium Santa Lucia on, and Rick had his new Battaglin chromovelato, not Eroica legal, but a cool bike. We kept our social distance on a ride that was about 1/2 empty Orange Line bike path. Not Eroica, but good times!

For my non-Eroica on Saturday I stuck to familiar roads. I took my 1972 Nishiki Professional.

Having ridden these roads for more than 40 years, I sometimes take for granted how pretty it is in spring. I remember as a young racer in the mid-1970’s, a rider from southern California told me Iwas lucky to have a place like this to train. I told him to come back in July and see if he felt the same.

If you were planning to ride the Piedras Blancas route and hoped to see the zebras at Hearst Castle, here’s a scene near the middle of my ride my ride.

I put in a few miles on the gravel paths in the city park near home to keep me honest, and finished with 55 miles and 2,000 feet of climbing.

I’ll be surprised if Eroica California is rescheduled for the fall, and expect registrations to be rolled over to next year. I hope I’ll get to see old friends again and meet a few more of you then.
