stem extender
I own a Trek 830 mountain track and would like to purchase a stem extender to raise the handlebars, but am having trouble finding one. Any suggestions?

There are Stems available with a higher angle. For example if your current bike has a 17 degree angle, you could choose one that is 25 or 30 degrees. This way your aren't adding an extender, you're just perfecting the stem itself.

Did you bother to search the web before signing up on BF? I typed 'bicycle stem extender' into my browser and got a ton of hits. $10-$25 price range based on brand and color, pick whatever type you need.

Threaded or threadless stem? Or is that the problem, that you don't know what you have so don't know what to get? I've always said there are no dumb questions, but maybe the ones that are unanswerable due to vagueness are.

If you Trek 830 is an older bike with a threaded headset, it is simple to raise the bars if there is stem left inside. Loosen the top bolt a couple turns and whack it with a mallet to break the wedge loose. Raise it to the minimum insertion mark and see if that gets you where you want to be.

Without knowing if your stem is a quill stem or threadless we can't really help you

Maybe you might need a bike that is better suited for you? Generally when going to extremes like that, the bike might be the wrong fit and a wrongly fitting bike isn't a good deal.

Bought two of these with a 3rd on the way. Had a Delta but don't recommend it. An extender that you can't use spacers with looks fugly.

I have one and other than being more expensive than the one you list I really like it. Very well made unit.
One of the advantages of these risers is you don't need to use spacers. As you know they allow putting the bar at any height without having to adjust the headset.
As for being ugly, these riser do uglify a bike anyway you look at it. Hard to imagine spacers making much of a difference.

I would suggest getting a threaded to threadless stem adaptor. then, you can add in your stem extender, and have a whole plethora of different stem shapes/designs to choose from.

Curious, what was wrong with the delta? Just the way it looked? Was it the tapered edge that prevents stacking spacers?

Sounds likes a 1" quill to me. That was what my Trek 800 from early 1990's used. You can change it to threadless easy enough, but don't buy a cheap steel quill adapter. They bend.

No, that is as good a reason as any. Thought maybe it was faulty in some other way.
Have to admit the extender works really well and has made the bike much more comfortable to ride. I should probably get a set of high rise, wrap back handle bars for an upright riding position without the hokey looking extender. would need to recable for that.
I put a quill adapter on my 80's vintage road bike to use a modern stem.
Bar height seems to rise with age.
