When I was working for Twenty16-20 Mara Abbott was pretty slim. She won the Giro Donna, road nationals, etc. Had to have custom arm and leg warmers made by our clothing sponsor.

To see a pro cyclist off the bike, you wouldn't think they are some of the most incredibly well conditioned athletes in the world. I honestly believe that's why cyclists aren't as well respected by the general public as other pro athletes. It's cool to have a man crush on 6'5" 280 pound JJ Watt, but a pro cyclist...

Didn’t know him, at least too well, but Marco Pantani (the Pirate) was incredibly light weight at 126 lbs. Drugs aside, his light weight made for an incredible climber. BTW if you have Amazon Prime, there is a full length bio-pic on Marco which is fascinating and shows some one who was revered by an entire nation to becoming a pariah leading to his OD.

You mean Pantani. In ‘95 I was riding to a Giro stage finish at the Bianchi factory in Treviglio. He came spinning by in the other direction in his full Carerra team kit, including those horrible faux denim shorts. There was no mistaking those big ears. He had gotten injured during training and was sitting out the Giro to get ready for the TdF. Claudio Chiapucci was on the team that year. I have a great photo of him from a few days later in Sampeyer, as the race began the Col d’Angel. The stage was supposed to finish in Briancon, France, but a meter of snow fell and caused and avalanche that blocked the Angel, forcing a shortening of the stage.

Chris Froome at his peak performance and claimed weight of 146 lbs at 6'1" tall, he was near freakishly thin yet still retained enough power and stamina to excel at climbs and time trials. Even at 166 lbs early in his pro career he was slender but more muscular. Dropping 20 lbs on someone that tall without suffering a loss of strength and stamina takes a gift of genetics and hard work (with or without alleged PED use).
Alberto Contador at his peak of 137 lbs at 5'9" was comparable to Froome, although I don't know whether Contador ever tried to, or had to, drop 12% of his weight when he was already fit by ordinary standards.
If I'm recalling correctly Bradley Wiggins (6'3") lost a ridiculous amount of weight in order to improve his climbing (something like from 180 lbs on the track to 159 lbs on the road?). When you look at his walking around weight after retirement, as well as that of older retired cyclists like Greg LeMond and Eddy Merckx, it's obvious how much pro cyclists sacrifice to make weight.

I'm 5'6" with a muscular build from many years of weight lifting, never exceeding what I can't lift at least 15 reps. No pencil thin arms on me. I weighed 132 this week. As long as I ride around 150 miles per week, I stay in the 135-132 range. With effort, I could go lower. One year I rode 250 per week, but didn't lose any weight. I like my daily beer.
