aesthetic trends not worth trying again - e.g. paint splatter
Does anyone know when the horrible paint splatter bikes came into the scene? I'm not looking to degrade anyone's gem, my brother had an 80's Univega Alpina which was a great bike in every way except the paint job. His was a single color splatter which looked okay when the bike was dirty. But those multi-color Jackson Pollacks wanna bes were down right rude. Show us samples of these abominations especially if you still have one in your stable.
Other trends to mention?
- overdone fade jobs
- animal prints such as tiger stripes
- pro-replicas (think USPS and Liquigas)

I don't of the timeframe when spatter paint appeared(I'd guess 86/87?), but I have a bike that meets two of your criteria. Fade & spatter
FWIW, the spatter and fade are pretty tame next to this..

I read somewhere about the "Miami Vice" craze and impacts to design and colors which also found it's way to bikes. The combo of pastels and either splatters or fades makes me cringe. Schwinn PDG was the most guilty in applying this trend. Another chapter to close the book on for trends, along with the big hair and parachute pants of that era.

To each his own. I like the splatters, though I don't love them. I don't like the fades with two drastically contrasting colors, so I don't wish they were still being made. I don't like the current trend of gigantic logos.

As I recall, these paint jobs first splashed onto the scence in the mid-80s. The first bikes I recall seeing with the fade & splatter were Landsharks by John Slawta--maybe '87? In another "wild 80s paint job" thread there's an '88 Grandis with splatter paint. They were the "IT" bike to have on the SoCal race circuit. Imitators soon followed, including my own '89 Park Pre.
I will say, it makes touch ups easy (between us, that big splatter above the right shifter hides what was a nasty bit of chipped paint and rust from brake smack)!

I had a GT Tequesta in the pink "ghost" or "smoke" paint design.
I currently have a 1992 Hardrock Ultra in the "Miami Vice" pink/purple fade.
My current 1995 Trek 820 is Ice Cyan to Ice Violet Blue fade.
I am actually very attracted by some paint jobs. I like the "smoke" look and some of the fades, depending on the colors involved. So I don't wish them to go away.

How about helmets with dozens of points coming out the back? This trend is dying down, thankfully. Ostensibly, it was to make them more aero, but I'm not sure that was ever the case. I've read some tests have shown these points at the back of the helmet to be more dangerous due to the fact they sometime catch on the pavement during a crash and lead to neck injuries.
Black cycling socks.
Giving a nice geared road bike by the streamlined fixie (aka "Drewed") look.

I've seen trimbles with some nice animal prints over sweet fades!
Not animal, but cool stripes over a cool fade.

I'm not a big fan of the splatter paint but it doesn't bother me much. I certainly wouldn't paint over that ParkPre up there^!
Luckily I don't think any "good" bikes makers went for the fake granite look, just Huffy. That's the worst!

Matte paint and red/black/white schemes heavy on the graphical elements bug me. The earlier of the former are just getting to C&V status, still gonna be a while til most of the latter attain C&V status.
