Shimano 105 Brifters
Just purchased Marinoni Tourismo (2000) and the Shimano 105 (9 spd) brifters functionality is erratic, both L & R on up / down shifts.
Is there some simple trouble shooting or are they done?

What do you mean by erratic? The first thing I would check is the adjustment of the derailleurs.

Firm but gentle
If you carefully examine the action of the cable movement with each click you should easily be able discern if the brifter is at fault (doubtful). Cable tension is the first most likely culprit, cable drag, derailleur alignment. Youtube is your friend. Don't ride it at all until the shifting is perfect.

Do the flush & lube (look it up) and replace the cables and housings.

Really ?.
I'd have about 1/3 the lifetime mileage if I'd never ridden until the shifting was perfect. Luckily one of my bikes is Di2 and the shifting is always perfect. LOL.
@OP. It's not life or death, but Venturi has it correct that the first culprit is cables, housing etc...
