This is unrelated.....but on my cross country cycling trip for cancer we had a "Goo Challenge" where we raced to eat 3 "Goos" as fast as possible (they were chocolate, and we all hated that flavor). Here is video if your interested...They tasted horrible.

I've gotten pretty good at getting them into garbage cans without slowing down!!!
You've got to know the terrain though. One time I was riding up to a garbage can just on the grass when in front of me was a sinkhole!!! I endoed on the grass, happily realized nobody notice, and moved as long as if nothing had happened.

I roll the empty foil packets and shove them into one jersey pocket. The garment emerges from the laundry perfecly clean and fresh. No worries.

Ride up behind that arrogant jerk off "You can't hang with me 'cos I'm almost a pro" club rider and gently press the sticky end up his arse. Then flip him off as he drops you!!!!!

+1 on folding the gel over. Don't be one of those ******bags that throws it on the ground.

I vote for the bottle/flask too. I just keep the bottle in my jersey pocket so I can easily get a quick fix with no mess. I'll never just use the individual packets again during a race after using the bulk bottle.
For the really long rides like centuries I keep a few extra packets in the Camelback and reload if I need to which is usually when I've eaten all the extra food out of my jersey pockets too.
I keep the cell phone and anything else critical in a separate pouch in the Camelback along with extra inner tubes, CO2 cartridges, food, etc. I know most cyclists don't use Camelbacks but I also record most of my races with a helmet cam and most of the system goes in the bag too. Just another reason not to have sticky packets in my pockets.

option one is to roll it up nice and neat then stuff it in a jersey pocket. option two is if i have an empty watter bottle i deposit my trash in it. later.

Lot's of good answers and thanks for all the tips. Not sure yet which I think will best fit me, but I'll figure something out. I think having a gel flask and not having to deal with the individual packets may be the best option, but I do go through a lot of water and don't want to give up a water bottle for a gel bottle.

I like to use gel blocks. They are sugar cube sized blocks of gel that can be handled with your fingers. No sticky residue. They come six to a package and have 100 cal per 3 blocks. Before each ride, I dump however many I think I'll need into a zip-loc bag and every 30 minutes grab 3 out of my jersey pocket.

I as well use a hammer gel flask. Its holds 5 Gu packs. I wish Gu would get with the program and sell their product in bulk containers. It burns me to have to discard all that packaging in the landfill. Seems like it would take about a million years for it to break down. Not to mention that the per unit cost is higher than it needs to be with the packaging.

One thing I like about the packs over the flasks is that you know exactly how much you're consuming.

I roll it up so the sticky top part is in the center of the roll, fold it over and bite on it to keep the crease before sticking it back in my jersey pocket or bag. I can do all of it one handed in about 10 seconds. My other thought is that as long as I'm sticking it in an empty pocket, who cares about the stickiness because the jersey is going in the wash before it gets worn again.

I use a flask and fill it up with my homemade gel. Basically it's brown rice syrup and flavoring (pretty much the same stuff that Clifshot uses).

+1 on gel flask, a lot easier to deal with, especially on races. I wish GU (my fav lately), would come in bulk like Hammer or CarbBOOOOOOOOM

Try this. Holds 24 oz water AND 3.2 oz of gel.

I go to the local store and buy a couple of small squeeze bottles w/snap caps from the cosmetics/pharm dept. and before I ride i squeeze the gels into those and then mix 50/50 with water. Easy to use, no leak tops, the waters dilutes the gel to the point where it flows easily and I don't get sticky gel all over my hands... problem solved. Trash in teh can before I leave, plenty of gel, no sticky mess, reusable bottles.

+1 on the reusable flask. Fits in the jersey pocket, no trash, and saves some $$ over buying individual packets if you buy in bulk. Just make sure the flask is completely closed before you stow it in your pocket.
Also +1 on Hammer Apple Cinnamon. Very tasty!

Oddly enough, If I spot a GU on the side of the trail I will stop and grab it, and my eye has become very keen at spotting the GU packaging. Full Disclosure: I generally don't stop for other trash

I've seen a couple folks over the years just toss thier bar and gu wrappers on the ground. I even saw one guy toss his water bottle into the weeds just like in the pro races. Problem was, this was a charity ride, not a race at all. (Although listening to him talk, it was a bigger deal than the Tour day Frantz)
Next time I see some ******nozzle drop his trash, he's getting a frame pump in the spokes. There is really no excuse for throwing your crap on the ground.
