Coasting

https://bikeportland.org/2007/03/16/s...ory/#more-3221

Interesting read about the future of recreational cycling and Shimano's effort to get more people onto bikes. Who doesn't love a little coasting now and then (quiet, you fixed elitists)?

And this is just a sweet new hub system: https://www.fallbrooktech.com/NuVinci.asp

Just thought I'd share.

On a similar note, Subway sandwiches gave away several hundred bikes to random people on the streets of NYC as a reward for looking "fit". I don't really eat subways much (no real reason though), but I thought it was an excellent campaign.

Shouldn't Subway give bikes to people who don't look fit? 'Cause they need to exercise?

maybe subway's logic is that "unfit" people will see "fit" people getting things for free strictly for "looking fit" and want to "look fit" as well.

this is one thing that's always baffled me about society's perception of what fitness looks like. a lot of people consider "looking fit" to strictly mean "not overweight." being lean or thin doesn't necessarily mean that you're actually fit.

oh, society.

No, but they're a lot closer to fit than the overweight person beside them.

[edit] to stay on topic, I despise the whole Coasting gimmick - especially the name itself.

hardly true.

to me being fit means that you can handle extended periods of physical activity and not be completely winded or physically exhausted as a result of said activity. i'm overweight and i know for a fact i'm in better shape than a lot of people who would most people would consider fit.

Maybe our definitions of overweight vary. Just about everyone is overweight. I guess I'm thinking obese.

Either way, you frequently hear fat (to be really politically correct) people talking about that they're "in-shape" and can lift X, and run Y. Take that person down to 15ish% bodyfat and I'll bet they change their opinion of how "in shape" they were before...

i weigh 240 pounds and i'm 6' tall, i definitely have excess body fat, but i do think i'm in pretty good shape. i'm not saying i can run a marathon and bench press 300 pounds or anything, but i'd wager i'm in just as good, if not better shape than the average joe.

not all of us are blessed with super metabolism. i have several friends whose eating habits are much worse than mine and don't gain any weight ever, and they don't even ride bikes or work out.

I didn't realize the NuVinci was auto-shifting. I just thought it was internally-geared and manual. I guess that's kinda cool, but I thought auto-shifting had already been invented and produced? The design makes me think it would be very expensive to produce and repair.

I've been thinking lately how awesome electronic derailleurs and shifters would be. I guess it's more asthetic than practical, though...

How much does the NuVinci CVP Hub weigh?

.Weights will vary between model and application. The first model is designed for cruiser/comfort and commuter bicycles and weighs approximately 4.2kg with the freewheel and mounting hardware. While the weight of the NuVinci rear hub is greater than that of a rear derailleur drivetrain,, multiple chain rings, a cassette and dual shifters are no longer required.
whew. no thanks.

itss not auto shifting, the coasting group hub is. the OP posted links to two seperate technologies. The NuVinci hub is special because it has an infinitely variable transmission, not fixed rations.
