Recumbent What IS that thing?! Recumbents may be odd looking, but they have many advantages over a "wedgie" bicycle. Discuss the in's and out's recumbent lifestyle in the recumbent forum.

Check out the Velomobile Page: Velomobile enclosed recumbent tricycles - eiProject. The upper right is my favorite.

Velo-kits (body kits)

Silver Bullet Bodywork and Accessories for Velomobile Catrike - from AEM Consulting, Inc
The Aero Bullet prototype is mounted on a Catrike Trail model but is designed to fit most recumbent trikes currently on the market.

Blue Sky Design - HPV
Human Powered Vehicle applications
Many people are interested in building an enclosed HPV Velomobile or similar type vehicles. Our body shell parts may make that possible.

more will be added -

I've been watching the development of the Silver Bullet. It's just a shell, without wheel wells or floor. The Blue Sky is HUGE. I think it has a floor but wheels are open to the inside. Open bottom is okay for a track-only machine, if it's right down on the ground; but for a daily-use vehicle, you really need a sealed-off interior.

I tend to be hard on equipment, so the Rotovelo appeals to me in that respect. Someday I hope to test ride one to see if it's fast enough to suit me.

Did not realize the SB did not have a floor. I am seeing where a decent body will cost in the neighborhood of $5800.00 USD and up, weighing in at around 120 lbs.

I am looking for a body type like this:

You can get a bare-bones Rotovelo for about $6500 plus shipping. A roto will weigh 70-75 pounds or so. I'd want a few options, but still that's a good starting point.

Hi BlazingPedals,

That site you give presents only one image of the Trisled Rotovelo Velomobile:

Why not other perspectives like the backside? They say, "Price starting at $6500." I guess if you purchase it with all the options you get more images.

I am thinking these were just the bodies - but it looks like the product is the vehicle itself. The product pages do not give the details of the component and configurations. ref: https://www.backcountryrecumbentcycle...lo-velomobile/ or https://www.backcountryrecumbentcycle...luevelo-quest/

Are you in the States - in reference to shipping cost.

Trisled Rotovelo - Test Ride

Would have liked to have seen where the back - tail section, instead of painted red, would have a fully integrated rear light system with included stop light and turning signals. I have not seen any with this.

Rotovelo Test Ride---A Three-wheeled Velomobile

Trisled concept 4 seat velomobile

Wow, a four seater, can go to the drive in with this puppy.

The link was just for one of the US dealers. The parent company is in Ozzieland with a manufacturer here in N. America somewhere or another.

Trisled: Home

As an aside, I believe it was their Avatar that did quite well at Battle Mountain this year.

I really like the Lightfoot Ranger recumbent bike - does anyone make a shell for recumbent BIKES?

Shells for 2-wheelers are pretty much build-your-own. The bike inside is usually custom-made too.

Putting a shell around a Lightfoot Ranger would quickly become very large and tall. I'd bet it would be barely rideable in any real world scenario.

An acceptable compromise would be a long-wheelbase bike with a front fairing and fabric body sock. This gives you 80% of the advantage a hard-shell fairing with far less weight and complication. Several of my friends have ridden this arrangement for ages, including rides across the U.S: https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/ER2005

Monocoque would make more sense rather than a frame and separate shell . and save weight.

windshield and fabric cocoon thingy would be ok, I bet... I'm curious about the monocoque idea, but know nothing about it. Fietsbob, would you happen to have a link? I'll google it, but if you have something that's just too cool to be missed, I'd appreciate seeing it. This is all just brain cycling - I've got an upright that I can ride, but my hands and wrist hurt more and more as time goes and I can see which way the wind is blowing, here. I'm not smart, but I'm that smart.

Monocoque construction sounds cool, but the stresses are so low and the shell needs to be so large that the shell becomes very thin and fragile. The Quest velomobile is semi-monocoque- there's an aluminum frame molded into the shell to mount the drivetrain while the front wheels' suspension struts mount to the shell.

No joke. If I won the lottery, I'd be broke soon after. But I'd have a bunch of cool bikes.
