Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Seattle/San Francisco races October

I'm thinking about coming over to the states on vacation probably during October and was wondering what races are worth entering? I'll probably stay in either the San Francisco or Seattle area

Do I have to enter in advance or can I just turn up on the day?

What category should I enter? I currently finish about 1 (occasionally 2) laps down on the winner in the UK (we only have a senior and Veterans{over 40} category)

I have a UK race license, would I need to take a US one out for each race?

any answers gratefully received, and I might see some of you at an event.

Same day registration is normal unless you're at Pro level.

Dates aren't set until later in the year.

For San Francisco area look at https://www.ncnca.org/cyclocross/2005/index.php

For Seattle area I think that you can use https://www.seattlecyclocross.com/schedule.htm but maybe someone else has a better idea.

For the Norcal area, the calendar doesn't get updated with race dates until early August or so. Even then, race dates will change.
So, check the calendar and see what the promoters require for licensing. For example, CCCX series didn't require anyone to have a license but the other series, like East Bay, Pilarcitos and Velo Bella, did. Also, in the past, you could pretty much race any category you wanted but now, USA Cycling has set up categories, which is similar to the road categories. But, in your case, it might be simpler to buy the one day license then decide which race you want to do. From what I'm seeing on the local promoters aren't really for category idea so they might just let you race in whatever category you want. But, I'm sure this is going change in the coming months.
