1980 Zebrakenko Storm

Finally finished working on this 1980 Zebrakenko Storm. Many thanks to squirtdad for recommending the Velo Orange Postino bars in lieu of flat bars. Searching info about the bars led me to this VO blog entry. I copied the use of the shifter mounts with the Postino bars. The shifter mounts are pretty cool, allowing the use of down tube shifters on the handlebars. The bike was built for city use - for someone who did not want drop bars. Went with a VO quill stem, VO hammered fenders, VO metallic braid cable housing, and a Tortec Velocity rear rack. The steel wheels were too far gone, so replaced them with alloy wheels. The saddle is original - the Zebra logo faintly visible after 40 years. Chrome C/O Blue Magic.

Also thanks to due route for passing along a down tube cable stop, and to Tread Bike Shop for help with the axles on the new wheels and cabling the bike. The VO stuff isn't cheap, but their customer service is great. I had several subsequent questions about the parts I ordered - Scott from VO was very responsive.

Nice job 👌. I really like the color of the frame, and it looks great with the parts and cable housing you selected. That is the craziest rear rack I have ever seen. Is it made to hold pannier bags only? Is it skinny to reduce weight?

Very retro cool. Nice job. Just this morning I looked at that cable housing to possibly put it on a steel road bike I am rebuilding. I sure do like the looks of it.

Thanks, yeah, the Tortec Velocity is more of a commuting rack, although some of the sellers say it is ok for 'light touring'. I only use one pannier for commuting. I first saw one on a road bike about 10 years ago at Columbus Circle in NYC and started looking for them. I think they look nice on road bikes. Tough to find, I have used them on three bikes now, and had to order all of them from the UK - the shipping was pricey. I recently found one seller who sells them directly in the US, jejamescycles.com, but even so, it is a UK outfit. Not sure why Tortec doesn't distribute the Velocity in the US, other Tortec racks seem to be available.

Nice Job OP, I always thought the Zabrakenko Head badge looked like a haunted door knocker that might start talking to you.

sweet, sweet work! only suggestion I'd have for this beauty is to trim away most of those redundant inches to the Tortec's adjustable stays. So nicely done!
