I use a big straw gardening hat with a chin strap (actually a string with a bead). Since the bead tends to slide down, when I want the thing to stay on the top of my head as opposed to sitting on my back (with the string around my neck), I tie the chin string tightly and ride away. I have a large collection of these things (cost about $10). I pick one up most every trip to CA, since I ride my bike there while wearing a styrofoam hat and then buy a straw hat for sun protection when I arrive.

A railroad spike would be a one time use

Duct tape is removable but has some repercussions

a helmet can be removed over and over

they even have visors which make the hat moot

Also, if you click on the "Advocacy" in my Sig, you will see what has served me quite well in Kentucky, and a pic of me styling in it in the upper left corner.

Wide brimmed gardening hat.

My ex-FIL wears one of these. Largely because he is a farmer with a bike commute less than a quarter mile. However, annually, he rides more than me, more than most. So any wide brim straw hat with retention device is also in the running, especially the obtuse conical kind favored by riders in the far east who depend on bike transport...

Forget the shade of a brim and wear sunglasses.... the sunglasses will also protect your eyes from bugs and crap blown into the air by leaf blowers. Then protect your noggin (or at least your hair) with a due rag. Of course due rags look silly so I hide my due rags under a bicycle helmet which really does protect my noggin (and my brain) But if you don't think your brain is worth protecting.... you likely know best.

Even with glasses, there's usually an annoying void in shade coverage above the tops of glasses, especially as they tend to slide down my nose when I'm sweating.

Not going to go with a doo-rag, just not gonna do it. Don't think I can pull it off, stylistically.

Keep unfounded, hysterical, hyperbolic, misrepresentative helmet comments out of Hat Thread, please.

Protecting your ears and nose from the sun is pretty important, especially if you happen to be of Irish or Scottish descent. The problem with baseball caps is that your ears are not protected. As for your nose, probably the best thing is a nose shield like there is on some glacier goggles worn by mountaineers.

There's always bandanas, and winter is right around the corner, so neoprene masks will be back in vogue in certain locales. Ear coverage is a problem, but a boonie hat as posted earlier would work, as would straw hats which some seem to prefer.

Actually pretty good prices. I might grab a couple rather than wait for just the right Borsalino.

Take your favorite baseball cap, stitch a shoe lace to the back, crimp an alligator clip on the other end, and clip it to your collar. Never lose the hat that way. And very Fred like as well.

My Giro hat has all of those features.
