No, I don’t *need* any of those things. I chose those things, not because they’re trendy, but because that’s what I *want* on a bicycle that I spend 15-20 hours a week riding.

Augment my lack of ability? I’m not sure how to respond to that one. I think I’ll go cry.

You are seriously overstating how much less used bikes go for.

It is interesting that in this thread you keep saying used bikes are "pennies on the dollar", as if this deal were typical, but then in another thread you are saying that a comparable bike to the one you bought (similarly used, similar spec, similar original price, I assume) typically sells for $3000. So in that thread you are implying that a 9 year old used bike is typically selling for 60 cents on the dollar.... hardly a bargain in my book. So you are either BSing in this thread or the other one... which is it?

And one needs to wonder WHY your bike went for $1K when the other seemingly similar ones also on eBay went for $3K. My experience is that when a very well known brand and model (which your Cervello p3 certainly is) goes really cheap on a high volume site like eBay, there is usually a catch. It is not like this was some "sleeper" bike that nobody really appreciates.

Of course, maybe you just took your time and outsmarted everyone else (such as searching for mis-spellings of "Cervello"). But before you go into the "just be smart and patient look for the really good deal like I did" routine, remember that the same is true for new bikes. Last year's stock can be as much as 50% off. And this is for a new bike with all brand-spaking-new components and a warranty.

Buy whatever you want. Nothing wrong with buying used.... but since YOU ASKED if buying new is a waste of money, people are telling you why it is not necessarily so.

If I want a 9-year old used bike, I'll just keep my 9-year old bike. It's free.

I personally like to buy a few year old, one owner, babied, vehicles and certain expensive products that depreciate quickly. However, I was in the market for a bike that would truly fit me and that possibly would be my last bike so I bought in 2008 a fully custom Waterford RS33 with Campy Record, Ritchey and built with great workmanship This was costly but well worth it in the long run! Still ride 'er regularly and the smile I have on my face tells the story of satisfaction. Do what you feel like doing and what makes you happy. Life goes by quickly. Ride safely!

You know you can get a 20 year old rear screen projection TV for next to nothing these days. People are paying hundreds of dollars for new TVs with smaller viewing area. The fools!

MSRP has little to do with the value of a 9-year old bike.

In California that mortgage won't even get you a small, two-bedroom shack.

Congrats on freeing yourself from the bank.

That's a pretty car. I had a 1972 Chevy Malibu, same color, with the center console and SS style shifter.

I sold it to pay first year law school tuition. Now that I am a lawyer, I cannot afford to buy back that car. So I treat myself to nice, new bikes.

That was in '05. Purchase price was $347.5 for a 16'x50', two story, older rehab row home.

But yeah. It's nice to be free. But I did pick up a car payment 3 years ago. Only my second car in 54 years of life. Got a special deal from Subaru because my employer handles finished vehicles. 2% below dealer invoice and 0% interest financing. 11 more months left on that.

Hang tight. I have a strong suspicion that within the next few years there will be plenty of "collector cars" available for a fraction of the crazy prices they garner today. A fancy unused car sitting covered in the garage will not be as important as paying the mortgage, bills, and eating. An especially good time to have zero debt.

I'm still waiting to fix my two SuperBeta HiFis and watch my Jefferson Starship video collection.

You ain't getting a decent 8 track machine, especially a recorder for $15.

Scuse me while I crank up Foreigner 4.

Bought two new bikes at the end of last year.

1962 Sears J.C. Higgins Flightliner and one of the 80s Schwinn Cruisers, last years for Chicago production.

I'd never owned a Flightliner before, new to me.

I don't think I've ever bought a vintage bike for less than $150 and believe me, all the doohickies you gotta add or replace make most of them over $600 easily.

I wish! My Twister was GF7 Lime Green, somebody sprayed it with grey primer, 225 Slant Six and auto transmission, which I had transplanted from my 1969 Dodge Dart I had totalled...I drove it until the K-members began to fall apart and I knew I couldn't afford to fix them, weakest link in the A-body lines. Koller Dodge always advertised racing parts in Hot Rod and that wasn't cheap.

No, you are missing the point that the MSRP of a bike is not that relevant after it has been used for 9 years.
