Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New years day ride!

Just got back from a group ride organized by our local bike club. 8 of us showed up for 20 miles, starting at 34F and finishing around 37F, so it was cold, but it was sunny and a good time was had by all.

Xmas report: for this ride I used the following new items:
-New floor pump to inflate tires
-New gloves and new silk glove liners...very effective for cold
-New bike computer
-New bike shorts (worn under warm overpants)

It was low 20°sF, light snow flurries, and 29.2 miles of dirt road riding for this crew. It was plenty of fun until one of the guys picked up a stick and went down hard. One of the guys is a physician for the Red Wings, so that was nice to have, but it was a ride-ending crash, broken collarbone and perhaps torn rotators. Ouch!

Sorry to hear about the injury, I was going to stop and take some pictures from the ride I just got back from but I thought it would be mean to post pictures of people swimming in Lake Minneola with sunbathers enjoying the 85 degree day we're having here in Central Florida, especially after seeing that photo above. Had a great solo ride today of about 30 miles, couldn't ask for better weather but there's rain and a cold front coming through tonight. I'll have to break out the jacket, its going to be in the mid 60's!

The above picture makes me feel ashamed of myself. That looks like an epic group ride! It's only 50 degrees here, but I rode the trainer anyway. The lure of watching college football bowl games was too much.

3 hours, 56 "miles" ridden.

Happy New Year!

Dont feel bad - it was 40* here and I rode the trainer so I could watch Gameday and the start of the UF/UM game.

Treon Harris should be forced to walk home. Oh well, as we say:

Went for a short 20mi ride. It was 25 degrees and windy but I was dressed for it - felt great. I really enjoy riding in the winter and trying to do it as long as I can. I'm wanting to stay off the indoor trainer as long as I can.

I like how one of them showed up with a mountain bike (or is it a Crosstrail hybrid?). Was he able to keep up with you guys?

Sorry, we're not all hard core century riders when it's near-freezing temperatures....anyway, it was just a community ride open to the public, there was a run/walk organized along with it that all started the same place.

It worked out, because we did have a non-regular show up, who wasn't quite fit enough to keeping up with the rest of us....so we stopped and waited at the top of the main climb, and didn't go that fast...just a nice ride to kick off the new year...but no snow....

You know what you're missing out on, dvdslw? All the opportunities winter affords for accumulating more and specialized gear! And yes, a pic of swimmers would have been mean, but, a pic of sunbathing beauties...

Kudos! 3 hours is an epic trainer ride, IMO, and something I could not do, I think.

Went out late, so I did 60 km after sundown. Dry and not too cold at 6° Celsius, felt nice.

Being that is was New Years Day, complete with hangovers, it was basically a no-drop ride, so yeah, I think he did fine. The tempo only lifted and got fast once, otherwise we were in the 15-18mph range.

Lol I didn't say you should be riding a century, but what is probably about a 1 hour ride is shorter than any group ride I've heard about. Mid 30's isn't bad at all once you warm up. Better than not riding, though.

30 miles solo on the road bike.

3 miles on the fixed gear bike to get Chinese food.

No, temp was not bad...we had fun, and we were not going anywhere near 20 mph...probably averaged 15-18 on the flats...7-9mph on the 2 mile climb.

Short ride here, nursing an injured neck and just wanting some saddle time. Did a nice 1 hour ride in the cold, lots of frozen over puddles in the shade. Plus is the jacket I bought proved to be worth every cent. Only cold part of my body was face and toes. Got the face covered next time but toes are going to be tricky. All in all a good ride and I passed a few others out there. Great start for my year.

Over the holidays I picked up, for the first time in 30 years of cycling, a pair of proper winter cycling shoes. I'd always done the over-shoe/bootie thing, and even chemical warmers, but finally got sick of all the futzing and usually numb feet.

So, I bought some nice Northwave Celsius 2 GTX Arctics, and took them out for their maiden voyage today, with a pair of DeFeet "The Blaze" wool socks. They worked very well in the low 20° F temps today, at least until we stopped to attend the accident, which was probably about 20-30minutes just standing around on the road waiting for the pick up car.

I don't think they'll do much for long when it's in the teens, temp wise, but they should be a welcome and toasty shoe right up into the 40s, which is when the cold feet start happening for me.

This morning's ride, first in over two weeks, was not much different than a usual weekday ride - just 23 miles around the usual road - except I waited until it got light out. It was sort of gloomy out, but dry and not too cold. Went out sort of aimlessly, and attacked the first hill I came to like a crazy person. Very little traffic out, but a handful of other riders, who were all extra cheery.
Made my way to River Road and encountered a friend coming the other way, so I turned around and rode with him a bit. But he was headed all the way to Bear Mountain (which it seems a number of other folks decided to do today), and I hadn't really had breakfast and was feeling kind of achy from that crazy attack earlier, so after a few miles I turned around. No big deal, because group rides are planned for the next two days

Did 25 miles solo this morning on my new tubeless Schwalbe Pro One's . . . and set 5 PR's in the process. Great way to start off a New Year. Best wishes to you all for a great 2016 (and hopefully sans broken bones).

~50 miles with the neighboring club, & annual picnic after.

There was heavy frost, & the most interesting part was a long steep climb on frosty road-

barely enough traction to keep moving. The tandem had to walk it.

Fortunately, the descent was on the sunny side.
