Websites for Weather Forecast

What website(s) do you use for the weather forecast? Are there any that are designed for cyclists?

i don't know what would be different about a cyclist orientated weather site, but i use wunderground.com. I like it becase the radar is nice for me to see the rain approaching, and also there's a lot of personal weather stations in my area so I can see what the conditions are in a specific location.

I use accuweather.com it hasn't failed me yet. The only time I like to get wet is in the shower.

The NOAA Area Forecast Discussions are the best weather forecasts out there. There is some meteorological jargon (fortunately hyperlinked to definitions) but its good for the geek factor

Here's the one for NYC

https://www.srh.noaa.gov/fwd/productv...DOKX&version=0

And the Monterey / SF Bay one for other left-coasters:

https://www.srh.noaa.gov/fwd/productv...DMTR&version=0

Eh, in my area they have a hard time reliably predicting the weather 4 hours in advance. If it's not raining, I just ride, and if I get wet, I get wet.

wunderground and NOAA for me. Denver weather forecasts change on the fly a lot, but these two seem to be ok.

weather.com is usually a couple of hours behind what's actually going on - can't trust it.

Thanks for the tip. I've been just going to weather.com, but I just pulled down Weather Watcher. It references the same data. I like the option to set up an auto-updated map as wallpaper. That should save a bit of time in the mornings when choosing clothing for the commute.

I've always used wunderground... especially since I used to work for UMich and that's where wunderground started. Also as a pilot, I have access to DUAT.

I use some of the various weather sites listed earlier, such as wunderground, but I also rely on my own perceptions, too. Let yourself guess at the weather a few times, and I think you might be almost as accurate as the forecasts for the immediate conditions. I mean, they've been predicting rain for the last few days here, and I have not seen it. The clouds are heavy, but moving quickly enough SE, and over the last few days have picked up moisture, so there might be rain tomorrow...but, hasn't been the case all week.

Weather.com the night before.
I also have a NOAA weather radio which I'll listen to as I get ready. The only weather that I don't ride out in are complete torrential downpours and when lightening is very close by.

https://nws.noaa.com - Just put in your zip code.
https://www.sc.maricopa.edu/weather/ - The station sits on the roof at work, so it's pretty accurate for my ride.

I'm not sure what information a bicyclist specific weather report would report that differs from general weather sites.

I use www.intellicast.com
But I think sometimes the radar images are a little misleading. On a few occasions there appeared to be rain, but there was none. Also, you have to make sure you're looking at the most current map. Something about that site or my browser makes my browser pull up cached versions of that site that are sometimes a few hours or days old. So other sites might be better.

I use this to see how winds will be and if a front is coming. The tighter the line pattern, the stronger the winds.
https://www.intellicast.com/Local/USN...=none&pid=none

I use this for live radar pictures. To zoom in on your town simply click on the approx spot where you are.
https://www.intellicast.com/Local/USN...p&prodnav=none

For the current temperature, winds, etc. and the 10 day forecast I use this. Just enter you zip code in the box in the upper right corner for your area.

I also monitor the local weather using wmweather+ which resides in my FvwmWharf (similar to the Dock for anyone who has ever used NeXTSTEP). It pulls data directly from the NOAA. It will download forecasts and special weather advisories too. It can also display any type of satelite or map imagery from any source you want. I have it retrieving the maps from weather.com because they look the pretiest for my area. The application can be set up to display based on location. In some locations where local sites are more accurate, I set it up to retrieve directly from there. This app is for Unix and Unix-like OSes. It was developed on linux but I have ported the code to both FreeBSD and Solaris as that's what I typically run. I think there might be a similar application for Windows and/or MacOS as well. It's convenient to just be able to glance to the side of your screen and instantly see the weather.

In the screenshot below, you can see that the app is displaying the current weather at KSEA (SEATAC airport). The data is timestamped at 2256 PST (0556 UTC), it's cloudy, temp is 57 deg F, 72% humidity, winds are north at 4MPH, pressure is 29.92 and the windchill is 56 deg F. If I wanted to, I could click on the "FCST" button and scroll through several days worth of forecasts (incremented every 3 hours starting from current time) or click on the "MAP" button and see the current radar or satelite image.

No, I can't understand most of it either, and being into ham radio that stuff is important .... radio/ionosphere weather :-)

I also run wmSpaceWeather. Solar magnetic events also have ramifications on the health of computers and computer networks as well so I try and monitor it.

There's a pretty good explanation of how electron and proton flux levels as well as x-ray intensity and geomagnetic disruption levels effect effect electronics in the manpage.

Code:
Misc. Reference Manual Pages WMSPACEWEATHER(1.1)

NAME
WMSPACEWEATHER - Dockable Space Weather Monitor

SYNOPSIS
     wmSpaceWeather [-h] [-display <Display>]

DESCRIPTION
wmSpaceWeather is a space weather monitor. The monitor
shows: 2 relativistic electron and 3 relativistic proton
flux levels at geosyncronous orbit (currently from the NOAA
GOES spacecraft), current Solar Flare X-ray flux, and the
last 8 3-hour Kp index values.

Large fluxes of relativistic (aka `Killer') electrons can
     cause harmful `deep-dielectric' charging/discharging events
inside satellites. High proton fluxes (`Solar Energetic Pro-
ton' or SEP events) can cause single event upsets in satel-
lite electronics. The Kp index is a measure of how disturbed
the Earth's magnetic field has been over a 3-hour interval.
Kp can range from 0-9, where 0 is quiet and 9 is very dis-
turbed. The Kp values shown are the 8 previous values (i.e.
the last 24 hours). If the display is up-to-date, the LED
next to the Kp bars will flash blue. If the display is not
up-to-date, the LED will flash orange.

OPTIONS
-h Display list of command-line options.

     -display [display]
          Use an alternate X Display.

BUGS
Let me know if/when you find any.
