Hi, guys. I know this has nothing to do with functionality. I just want to make the "look" right. I've been riding c-record equipped Colnago master piu in Lampre team color. And recently I acquired an Eddy corsa extra in blue. I also have a complete set of dura ace 74XX in storeroom. Here is my dilemma, should the eddy be paired with c-record or dura ace... both groups are in very good condition. how about choice of saddle and bartape? I'd prefer a low profiled saddle like flite, but difficult to find it in yellow.

Any input would be appreciated!

Put the Dura Ace group on whatever bike you will ride more, and the C Record on the one that will hang on the wall.

I say Dura Ace group on the Merckx. Many famous Merckx bikes equipped with Dura Ace, so Dura Ace will not look out of place on your Merckx.

+1 for 7402 on the merckx... its belgian anyways... c-record stays all italian with the colnago. i'd really try and go for a period correct saddle too. for me the super slim low profile saddles of today just look out of place on the old steel bikes. a san marco regal/ rolls/ concor... a cinelli volare slx if you're lucky enough to find one, or a selle italia turbomatic would be killer... the flite is okay, i've just never been a fan of the shape. but saddles are mostly about comfort anyways. bar tape should match the color of the saddle or be white, end of story.

Thanks! I have a white perforated rolls on the way. How about wheels? Vento (8S) or DA7800 + Open pro? Will the old 7401 RD work well with 10S chain? BTW, I'm on fiction shifting.

Sliver Open Pro would be my choice. Sorry, I don't have an answer on the 7401 and a 10s chain.

no reason why you couldn't run a 10s chain with really any kind of derailleur. remember, speeds/ compatibility are associated with chain/ cassette/ shifter.... not RDs. and if you run friction, then its all out the window! that said, i have noticed that using a 10sp chain on anything 7 or less speeds does produce less than desirable shifts. the chain is so narrow sometimes it gets caught/ hung up between cogs and shifting from small ring to big requires more movement from the FD which can sometimes throw the chain off or moves the FD so far that it rubs against the crankarm. 8sp chains are so cheap now there's really no point not getting one if you are running 8 sp.

I'd check the sprockets on the derailleur versus the 10 speed chain. I believe newer (9 &10) sprockets have a narrower profile.

My gut reaction would be to put the campy on the Colnago, but given the color schemes of both bikes I feel like the DA would look far better on the 'nago.

Thanks for all the inputs! The reason to use 10s chain and cassette with other 8s parts is that I have a DA7801 + Open pro wheelset ready at home, which unfortunately only takes 10s cassette. I don't want to invest in another wheelset at this monment.

I tried a small length of 10s chain on 7402 RD. The 8S jockey wheels look thicker than the 10s. There is almost no play for the 10s chain sitting on the jockey wheel. I'm wondering if small chain-jockey play is important for shifting performance. I hope I don't have to replace the RD jockey wheels with 10s ones, as they are the original dura ace ceramic version...
