Accident yesterday on Alpine Rd

Hi Folks,

I was in the vicinity of Alpine Rd and I280 yesterday, and there was a lot of emergency activity and many cars stopped at the intersection. Rumour has it there was another bike accident - Does anyone here know what happened?

The reason I ask is that I'm chair of the Portola Valley Bicycle, Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Committee, and we like to keep tabs on incidents in the neighbourhood. (And yes, PV really does like bikes...)

Thanks in advance,

Ed Holland

Here is some info from the CHP. Initial report said a car hit 2 bicyclists. Details are sparse, though.

There is a plan to modify the road layout, with engineering to commence during Summer 2013, per the San Mateo Public Works website: https://www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/portal/...001937230a____

SVBC also has details here https://bikesiliconvalley.org/content/1825

I went by it, apparently a while after it happened, as I didn't see any cyclists or ambulance. It was west of the fwy interchange, just past where
San Francisquito Creek rd. intersects alpine heading toward 280. I did see the cars' side mirror torn off and sitting in the road, so that sounds bad.

And here I was thinking that was a fairly safe area - decent shoulders, good visibility...

I ride down Alpine pat 280 quite a bit, and what makes me the most nervous are people turning onto and off of the road. You can see them fixating on any gaps in car traffic completely blind to anybody riding on the shoulder, even WITH a clear sight line.
