8 speed barcons
Hi, brand new here. I'm setting up a Performance Blue Ridge. My components are fairly vintage. The frame lacks DT bosses for the shifter cables so for simplicity I'd like to use my Shimano 8spd bar end shifters. The wheels are 7 speed Shimano cassette. Will the 8 speed shifters index with the 7 speed cassette?

Yep.
I'd suggest setting it up so you have the extra position on the top end. Better to have a little extra slack than to be pulling against the limit stop, IMHO.

I'm guessing he means no shifter boss.

There is .2mm of cog c-c difference between Shimano 7 speed and 8 speed cogs. So for a few shifts the difference is easily taken up with system slop (be it designed in guide pulley end float or worn parts). But after a bunch of shifts/clicks the difference can add up to enough to keep the guide pulley well centered under the intended cog. Some bikes tolerate this better then others (as with some riders being more sensitive then others). The few times I must work on a bike with mismatched indexing I will usually set the cable with the chain on the middle rear cog, not the second smallest cog as Shimano usually suggests. Andy

the 'center-on' top pulley having side side to side motion , should compensate for +/- variations ..

....there's usually a cable barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur that is more than adequate for fine adjustments. And you don't really need one for the front unless you're OCD.

If it was my bike I'd use the barcons in friction mode and not have to futz with the 7 vs. 8 speed spacing difference.
