3/4" grips-Specialized Crossroads-options?

Working on a 21 speed Specialized Crossroads hybrid. Presumably an early 90's model. The right shifter had gummed up and I took it off to soak in solvent. I was surprised to find the handlebar grips are 3/4" diameter instead of the normal 22mm. The handlebar diameter steps down from 22mm where the brake lever and the 3/4" grips meet. I have some spare 22mm grips that I had slated for the bike. Is there a simple way to build up the bar diameter to match standard grips? This a budget build to get the bike rolling.
