Thanks so much! So much common sense. Sadly, local bicycle advocacy groups seem to be of the opposite view and more and more of new bicycle infrastructure seems to be designed to push cyclists out of traffic with the goal of creating a false sense of security for those unwilling to learn to ride competently and safely on the roads. I see more and more safe routes being converted to outrageously dangerous "bike routes" which I now avoid like the plague. We are on a slippery slope of being pushed back off the roads by people pretending to be bicycle advocates. Scary. I apologize if I am being inappropriate here. I was curious to see what thoughts there were 50 years ago.

I love these posts. I find it fascinating how little has really changed in 50 years.

Another excellent post! I loved the Beacon ad. My first real 10 speed was a beacon. Wasn't a great bike but it was way better than a huffy.

There were many articles and letters about cyclists using public roads published in the 70s issues. I haven't read all of them and have posted very few. At times I think posting all of the articles (from 1960s forward) concerning bicycle safety, advocacy, education, and road use might be of interest.

At about the time this came out our local community college offered a cycling class and my wife and I took the class. We had decided to park our cars for a few years and rely on pedal power for transportation. The class taught us about vehicular cycling . It was a hot topic even back then and still is . We survived about 3 years , rain and wind or anything that nature threw at us . It was a great experience and I still use the technique today with few problems. I use bike lanes when available but rarely bike paths as they are mostly MUP’s . Thank you for posting this article, it brought back a few happy memories. The old cycling magazines are so cool because I was cycling back then …. A LOT! Still pedaling along , Joe
