International Shipping (non-coupler complete bike)?
I'm in Japan and will be for a couple more years, but I'll want to ship a nice bike to the US when I move there. Anyone have any info on costs of shipping a complete non-coupled, full-size bike internationally?

My guess is that it would be cheaper to simply fly with it.

It is airline-dependent, and you should double-check the information in the following link, but it looks like JAL, for example, allows you to do this for free:

Price will be different in a couple years.
There will probably be room on United flights.

I'd take it with you on the airline and ship some of your other possessions (if needed), shipping a bike from Japan will probably cost you a good chunk of the value of the bike if it isn't something top end or rare.
When I was looking at it to Europe as an alternative to flying, it was around $450 on FedEx and UPS, IIRC. Even an expensive $150 each way (about the top of the various airline fees) is cheap in comparison. Size is really what gets you on shipping, not to mention easier dealing with customs if it travels with you.
EDIT: just for S&G, I punched in a box right up to the UPS maximums (before overweight charges start to apply, and at a non-dutiable value) from Tokyo to Michigan. Cheapest I could get it was $984

Thanks everyone, that's very helpful. I wouldn't take a bike with me at all unless it was really high-end, like the custom build I'm planning (or another nice production option that might supplant that plan). But it's nice to know there are options.
