Is it a sin to mix groupsets?
For example, Ultegra cranks and cassette with 105 shifters and DRs?
It’s a 105 level bike.
In this case for the purposes of a crank-based power meter of said brand.
just considering some options and it made me wonder.
thanks!

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned:
I have a SRAM/Quarq crankset on an otherwise all-Ultegra bike. I have a Stages crankarm on an otherwise all-DA bike. I've got a CX bike with Shimano/Stages/SRAM. My kid's road bike has a SRAM crankset on an Campy Chorus/Centaur bike. Oh, and my kid's CX bike has an FSA crankset on a 105/Tiagra bike.

Many shifter/derailleur combos don't communicate well with one another; however, 105 and Ultegra share the same articulation/cable pull engineering so you're not just good you're great! I once shifted an Ultegra derailleur/cassette combo with a Dura Ace shifter. Same thing.
I am running a Sugino crank, Ultegra chainring, Deore cassette/shifter/DR on on of my bikes. You have tons of flexibility on which cranks will work. Knock yourself out!

The bike manufacturer's do it all the time.
I too have a 105 FC-5800 crank with chainwheels from a Ultegra FC-R8000. Spider profiles don't match up, but I figure you won't be able to tell when I pass you. <grin>

I've got a bike with Chorus everything except a Centaur cassette and a Veloce rear derailleur. I have not yet been excommunicated, but then, this pope seems quite tolerant.

Gasp! I have one bike with SRAM Red shifters, SRAM Force fd, Ultegra rd, 105 crank and FSA SLK rim brakes. Works great, even if my Campy purist buddies shun me.

The only real sin is putting anything other than Campy on an Italian frame. And no, Team Jumbo–Visma doesn't get a pass on this! Some things are more sacred than sponorships and money.

Quite true. Just make sure it's the Italian made campy. There's nothing wrong with 8 speed.

Unlike that Japanese stuff striving for nothingness and nirvana. There's a catechism for Campy. There are rules. None of this "discovering your inner Buddha nature" nonsense for the Italians.

My 1993 Trek 5900 was the flagship model for that year and carried a mishmash of parts. Whichever was lightest went on the bike: some Dura Ace drivetrain stuff but downtube rather than integrated shifters to save weight; Dia Comp brakes; White Industries titanium BB; Chris King titanium headset; Ibis titanium threadless stem, one of those odd duck 1" things that superficially resembled a quill stem. Looks like Trek went for minimum weight first, with price only a secondary consideration, and no regard to group marque.
