I hope the vintage purists can forgive me... The frame, cranks, stem, and bars are from a 1986 SR400. I stripped and powder coated the frame and old Shimano 600 cranks last year and added more modern decals. The rest of the components are Dura-Ace 7800.

My 1986 SR900, with its original Campy Nuovo/Super Record hardware. The brake levers are Dia Compe Aero Gran Compe 250s, which are a bother to find replacement hoods for; these are slowly melting.
Excuse the cable ties on the top tube! I just 3D printed some new cable clips after the original ones broke, and I haven't fitted them yet.

As vintage as Cannondale gets. 1983 ST-500, serial #AA0297 . Only had it a month but so far gets all the ride time.

Man, what nice looking paint job. Dig the bar wrap too.

Felt a little guilty after the last post.

My design for replacement cable guides, snap in just like the discontinued ones.

And a view from the "right" side, the one with the hardware on it:

I found this '87 SR-500 as a pile in someone's basement and took it home for $20. Everything was in pretty great condition, but the bars were bent, so I added Velo Orange randonneur bars and a riser stem. After a thorough cleaning it looks pretty good, aside from some paint chips, and it rides very nicely. It's just a little too small for me, so I'll have to find a new home for it.

Just finished this very special vintage '87 Cannondale build for a fellow in Tampa who always wanted one of these but couldn't afford one until now. Original finish on the frame, although it did require some hand-mixed touchups. The Dura Ace 8 speed group is almost all new- everything but the brake calipers and hubs- right out of the boxes, from a personal hoard that I'd acquired over several years:

Seat post is a period correct Shimano 640X, tires are Vittoria Rubino Pro III's, hubs are laced to new Pacenti PL23 polished box section rims. That's a 12-23 cassette on there (hey, Florida is pretty flat!) and a KMC chain. Stainless Shimano cables on the brakes, original stainless 7402 cables on the derailleurs. 3TTT anatomic/ergo bars with a Cinelli stem. Even the bar tape, saddle and cable housing matched up pretty well, I think:

Fun build, really nice guy to work with, all in all a great project.

You do really nice work, those Dales look very inviting. Reminds me of why I have mine, and my daughter rides my old '97 R500.

Here's my 1990 R400. Bagged this for $300 off of Bike Exchange. It's the exact same color and gruppo that I bought in '90. Most of the RX100 stuff is in a box now. Had to have a compact crankset in the Adirondack Mtns! Running 9 of 10speed cassette with 10sp Microshift levers. It has hardly any miles on it. It's fairly light, fits me, doesn't creak yet and it's vintage. Like me.

Hi. Nice ride. Have you had any problems in shifting on the front with the compact crankset, with what looks like a braze-on front derailer? And can I ask what kind of crankset and front derailer you are using?

Crankset is Origin 8 50/34. Had problems with the RX100 fd, needed constant trimming. Sram Rival fd is much better. Needs slight trim when cross chaining in small/small. Tried to use the RX100 rd but I think it was slightly bent, worn or the pulleys too wide for the 10sp chain. Replaced with Microshift 10spd rd. It was nice (and cost effective) just taking the 11t cog off the cassette - whacking it on the 126mm hub to upgrade to 9spd!

I bet that all took some headscratching. I ask because I just snared
a '91 criterium 3.0 and want to undergo a similar conversion to a
compact crankset and upgrade to 10 speed, which if successful i'll
document here. Just wondering what FD I might need...

The bike has screw holes for a braze-on FD, currently a Shimano 600
for 52/39 and it can probably be clamped about 5mm lower. The option
of trying to fit a band type FD somehow anyway (to make it reach, if
required) has also crossed my mind... The bike also currently has
Shimano 600 8speed STIs with an 8 speed HG cassette on 600 hubs
(forced into the 126mm O.L.D frame) which leads me to believe i can
also fit a 10 speed cassette on.

I'm very tempted to just go ahead and try it first since I have the
proposed parts from another bike (except for perhaps a better FD
option than the old 600), however I can't first -- before I start hooking up
cables, etc -- overlook the chance for some valuable feedback from anyone
who has tried similar...

Just try it. If the 8sp hub is 130OLD put on a cassette, 10sp chain and shifters - you're good to go. It may work with both derailleurs. If not replace them with 10sp specific. No problem with getting the FD lower. There's plenty of adjustment. I did put on a Sram chain watcher because as soon as the 10sp chain went on it started dumping off on downshifts. No problem now though.

I've found that the slightly smaller 105/1050, 5600, 5700 and 7400 FD's work well on compact size rings on those frames without having to grind out the braze on tab. In fact the 105 FD on my '88 SR shifts a 48 big ring very smoothly. The new 5800 FD is good too, and will work fine with friction front down tube shifters. Older Deore 600/700 series FD's work as well, but much harder to find as braze on type.

Try the 3M, Type 33, available in several colors found it in the electrical department at Lowes. Its not like garden variety electrical tape, our electrical subcontractors turned me on to it. I have their orange for the ends of the bar tape on my CAAD 10, in the Gulf Oil Racing livery. The good doctor's looks like that does on my bike.

1989 Cannondale Black Lightning I bought today. Frame stamp says made 10/1988, but definitely 1989 year specs.

I like the Cinelli saddle on the 1988 better. I actually think the Edge stuff looks good on this bike.

Well preserved. Just needs bar wrap really. So original I can't bring myself to pull the dork disk (yet).

Don't remember exactly where I got the frame. A couple of years ago came across three of them within about a week- a red, a white and this mint green. Still have the white....
