being on bike rides with folks who made the bikes they are riding?
from the 2016 Classic Rendezvous gathering... the fellow from Lyme, CT, who really got into the rando bike theme....
and Mike and Michael Barry, of Mariposa bicycles.....
actually, the whole event was pretty great, but this was a highlight.

Taking a chance with a buy-it-now on an auction with blurry pics and minimal description. And finding that yes, it is indeed a NOS wheelset with C-Record sheriff star hubs for $180. Still looking for the right bike to put them on.

Building a bike for a tough ride and then enjoying the heck out of the ride and how the bike performed.
The ride was the Coppi Centenario: 100 km of SW Wisconsin's finest hills (4300 ft. of climbing), beautiful countryside, and great company.
There is just something perfect about a bike that disappears under you on a long hard ride because it is built right.

As others said: buying a bike for a song... and then... extending that song into a physio-ode of increasing complexity and satisfaction with each acquisition and performance of wrench and sweet sweat....

Relating to those back in back in the day. Having the same joy when riding as they did. The connection is timeless and satisfying. At least to me.

Using an old, heavy and stiff as hell mountain bike as a commuter. I put my GT Palomar 1998 a blue headlight and people stare at the bike because of the blue light making the bike look "actual" while it is 21 years old. Also, another win for me is to beat up new bikes using my longest gear available on the original trans (52x14)

Getting on with a mid-swift paceline, all on modern carbon but for myself on a 50 year old pariah patina rusto racer.
Down tube friction, corncob 5 speed (call it whatever 64-98 gear inch), toe clips cinched in old leather cleats, tubulars (nice old tattered Vittoria's, Clements whatever... again). Optional: riding on a pound and a half crusty leather saddle.
