Live rear view bike camera

I'm going to have to agree, too much stuff on the bars. Plus to me it just seems like the more simpler solution is to just use a rear view mirror off the helmet. While I like the idea of being able to video record what is going on in front and behind you while riding, I hate the idea of having to go through all the charging and prep time needed to just get the bike ready to ride. Along with that I'm extremely doubtful that in event of an accident, even if one of the cameras gets a glimpse of the vehicle that hits you I think you would be extremely lucky if anything recorded was going to be useful enough to be able to I.D. the person or the vehicle that hit you. With the speed involved with normal moving traffic and the type of resolution used with most portable cameras, trying to get a clear readable image of someone's license tag ( while hitting you ) is going to be an extreme stroke of good luck. Not to mention if the people have no front tag that isn't going to help matters much.

I think perhaps you are reading too much into the comments. This is a public forum. People comment on what others are saying by giving their own opinion. The person who posted the OP is expecting comments. That is what forums are about. To the degree one really cares or doesn't would depend on the person making the comment. Most people are just giving their own benign opinion ( FWIW ) and are not trying to personally attack anyone. Best to take it with a grain of salt and move on. You commented as well so I could ask the same question of you but what would that do except to create some sort of circular argument. Have a nice day.

It's an internet comments section, people come to comment, and one should expect a variety of opinions. That's what a forum is for.

What a great idea.

I have been been researching for a live rear view camera for my mountain bike. Naturally I have considered the pros and cons of riding with such a camera and decided I am better of knowing what is going on behind me than riding blind. (I live in downtown Chicago, people!). I wanted the Hexagon but everywhere I checked it is no longer available. I recently purchased a Cyclecam Rearview WiFi Bike Camera (also called Homscam), but I'm having problems connecting it to my phone. I am familiar with all the cycliq products - they are record and view later. I wonder if anyone knows of any product presently on the market they would suggest. I will be most appreciative of such suggestions.

Since my earlier comment here, I did mess around with using a couple of burner phones, one working as the camera and the other as display, using an app to cast the display over bluetooth. I didn't really like it, not enough to try it out on the bike. Too complicated, and the screen update was kind of delayed which is a deal-killer.

A colleague purchased this gopro type action camera, on Amazon for about $60. It has WIFI support and a phone app, which I *think* means you can set up a limited network between your phone and this camera, and view the camera from the phone. A cheap phone could be the display then.
The video was very nice with built-in anti-shake and waterproof. I think it might work pretty well for the rear view setup.

I wonder if using your phone as a hotspot works like a router (creating a LAN)?
This is smaller and can be run off an external battery. Not waterproof.

It's fine if your ride is less than 2 hours. Or you can stop and swap batteries.

I expect that the phone app does make a local LAN, but I haven't looked at the app specifically. Worst case you can set up a wifi hotspot on the phone, but I doubt it would be necessary.
