Just did a very quick Google Maps routing check, Paris to Rambouillet is about 56km which is about 2-3 hours ride by bike, assuming train and bus services may be overbooked/packed as per the video's concern. On the other hand, Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines to Rambouillet as @unterhausen suggests is 27km distance, a lot more reasonable assuming one intends to ride to the starting point rather than rely on public transport.
Just browsing around the map, seems like a couple of other places like Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines (15km), Chartres (38km), Epernon (14km)...... but that's just with map browsing, not sure how feasible these places actually are to find lodging and so on...
Hopefully as the August draws closer we'll here more about how they intend to handle this large influx of riders in regards to transportation and ferrying riders to Rambouillet.

I lost track of how many people they allowed to register. It's going to be crazy. I'm going to have to find a big bag of cashews to carry with me

I wonder if France would frown on Costco cashews?
Definitely going to raid a Carrefour before the ride
My best food purchase in 2011 was a big chocolate bar I bought in the little grocery on the town square in Sizun. That got me through a lot. Unfortunately, it also gave me heartburn. But it was worth it.
In case anyone wonders what that structure is in Sizun that sticks out into the road, it's a replica of the Arc de Triomphe. Don't ask why 3 arches though

I’m thinking of buying a big jar of p te d’arachide for my pbp, something extra for all those baguettes.

I was talking to my wife about PBP yesterday, and she reminded me that I don't like crowds or standing in line which got me thinking. How bad is it really? I pre-registered for the 84-hour group which I understand is less crowded than the 90-hour group.

From 16:00, you will start in waves of about 300 people from the Rambouillet National Sheepfold.
Several departures could be chosen during the registration:Sunday, August 18, from 16:00 to 17:30 : 7 starts for solo bikes (80 hours time limit)
Sunday, August 18, from 17:45 : start for special bikes (90 hours time limit)
Sunday, August 18, from 18:00 to 21:00 : 13 starts for solo bikes (90 hours time limit)
Monday, August 19, from 04:45 : start for special bikes (84 hours time limit)
Monday, August 19, from 05:00 to 05:30 : start for solo bikes (84 hours time limit)

90h: (1 special + 13 solo bikes) x 300 = up to 4200 riders
They didn't mention the number of slots for the 84h start times, but going by what it looks like 15mins interval between starts, we get
84h: (1 special + 3 solo bikes) x 300 = up to 1200 riders
Since PBP is practically overbooked this year, I think it is safe to assume that we'll be hitting very close to these maximum numbers for each slot. That's seems like quite a huge difference in numbers. Also, the 84h slot starts nearly 8h after the last 90h start, so hopefully they had a large enough head start that we won't be entangling with the majority of the 90h crowd during the ride.

PBP registration is now open, but they had a bunch of additional stuff, both compulsory and optional; some of them I could provide (like jersey size), others I wasn't prepared to answer (optional meals, bed, bike check times). Anyways I just went along with the safest bet, but I hope the meals and accommodation are in some form of transferable coupons so that I can give them away if my eventual plans at the time do not match...

I'm told the sleeping is for 84 hour starters.

Yes, the night from Sunday-Monday sleep does imply that. The other starters would have already left the premises by then.

I finally registered and got airline tickets. Searching for lodging now. Starting to get excited, I love this ride.
Oh, and I have the fork and frame couplings together on the frame I'm going to ride. Better make some more progress soon or I'll be riding an unpainted bike.

I made some reservations for rooms in Trappes. I haven't decided yet if I want to try and snag an airbnb for the ride or roll the dice and just sleep/shower randomly at the controls. I have a flight picked out but I didn't book it yet... they take bikes in a plastic bag which is my preference so I'll likely go with that option. It seems like one can take an assembled bike on some of the RER trains outside of rush hour but I also couldn't find that stated explicitly on one of French websites... my backup plan is to just put my bike together and ride across Paris, seems like a nice way to spend a day without spending a bunch of money.

I've purchased my flight tickets, and booked a hotel room about 21km from Rambouillet, at Milon-la-Chapelle. Should be less than a hour's ride, but I'll need to do some recce the day before the bike check to make sure I am familiar with the route.

people were talking about all the good bike check spots disappearing, and I was wondering what that meant. It means not waking up at 6am to ride to bike check
I think I got one of the last few at 11am. I feel sorry for the people that have to be there at 8. Or maybe those slots are not going to be filled because the people will not register.

I made reservations for a camping spot in Villiers-le Morhier, about 20 km west of Rambouillet. My wife will come with me, and we will drive to France, so she can just drop me in Rambouillet on both saturday and sunday. The benefit of living only 300 miles north-east of Paris.

lol glad I completed my registration early. I picked 12:15 for the bike check, so plenty of time to wake up and ride to it, then immediately after, just in time for lunch.
After that, not entirely sure what I want to do there. If I meet any of my fellow countrymates who are doing the 90hr ride maybe I'll stay and chat with them, or maybe I'll just ride back to the hotel. If the route from the hotel to Rambouillet turns out to be not so nice, I might just stick around after the bike check until my ride the next morning, since I paid for meals and the sleeping package. Well, that keeps my options open, at the very least.

there are bike paths to Ramboullet from the Saint Quentin direction. I was casually looking for them on google maps, but I didn't find any yet
on edit: looks like it's only a short section along the N10

I picked one around 14:15 for the bike check, I plan to sleep in and that leaves me enough time to find some cheap brunch and ride over for the bike check. I hope the 2XL jersey is a good fit, seems like it will be if the numbers are close to accurate.
I still have to decide about booking a drop-bag, dunno if Travel Haus or Baxters make more sense for me. I have to check with the motel I booked to see if I can leave my "luggage" there while I'm on the ride... on the cascades last year I just used my luggage as a drop-bag since I only brought one set of casual clothes it was still smaller than some people's drop bags. I don't really want to carry 3 days worth of clothes on PBP... I could get by with 2 I suppose if I wash my shorts while showering and leave them on the bike to dry but I've only done that on tours where I have a hotel shower and the shorts only see 8 hours of riding or less...

I only wore 2 shorts in 2011 because the first pair didn't agree with me. Fortunately, the second pair was magic. So I wore it for 2 1/2 days. I am assuming I will use a drop bag service, only in Loudiac. I'll probably be carrying a change of clothes on either side of there though. Better than carrying 2. Clean jerseys were nice. Travel Haus is picking up in SQY, which is convenient for a lot of people, but not the ones that booked closer to Rambouillet. there is a Singaporean company that is also doing drop bags that someone recommended. Pickup in both SQY and Rambouillet. It is JFT services. I can PM people their email if anyone is interested. They also will meet you at every control for the low, low price of 3000 euro

Weird question -- the PBP website says that SR medals are NOT included this time around -- how do we get them if we want them? (I'll only care if I get a PBP medal to hang with it, but if I do I will really want both.) We're past the deadline where RUSA says "you have to get it at PBP" and we can't even apply to be recognized for it any more for this year. (I know, ask my RBA, but he's got enough to deal with since we're still gearing up for our 600.)

My local club awards them at the end of the year at a dinner/awards ceremony, so not sure how this will affect us this year. But likely they'll just owe us the medal and order next year's design... they still owe me two 400k medals for a similar reason.
