Usually the g-springs need replacing. Thankfully Campagnolo were still making parts then that were designed to be pulled apart and repaired. You can do it yourself if you have some patience, a nice IPA and an instructional video on You Tube. (Doesn't even have to be the same model, they didn't change all that much over the years.) I did mine and now they work flawlessly:

If doing the rebuild yourself, check carefully whether your rear/right-side shifter uses a left-hand threaded bolt (far left in excellent photo above). They are no longer available. I’ve been using 8-speed Ergo brifters (all Chorus or Sachs New Success) on all our bikes, with combined use of more than 60,000 miles, and have only needed about 6 rebuilds between all of them. BTW, I've appreciated the Campy Ergo rebuild instructions in Leonard Zinn’s “Zinn and the Art Of Road Bike Maintenance”. If I’d been using that for the first rebuild, I would not have broken one of those rare LH threaded bolts!

Campy g-springs are readily available, inexpensive and the most likely source of degraded shift quality. They are not shown separately in that photo but are visible in the ring in the center of that shot. Note that different springs are needed for left and right shifters.

Also, before assuming a rebuild is needed, not that it is all that difficult, make sure that the cable housing is still good. I’ve had several shift housings in which the wires move longitudinally, creating interference at the ferrule that acts like a bad shifter.
