Standard gear shifter (for derailler) on a hub gear bike?

Standard gear shifter (for derailler) on a hub gear bike?
Hey! i have not been able to find a 7 speed hub gear shifter (the thing on the steering wheel) for sale here in Norway and i'm wondering if anyone has tried using a normal 7 speed shifter (for derailler) with hub gears? is the distance the wire is pulled the same in both systems? it's shimano.

My understanding is that, unfortunately, none of the internal geared hubs are compatible with derailleur shifters. From the linked article: "Because of the uneven steps, most internal-gear hub shifters are not compatible with derailers, even if a ratio adjuster such as the JTek ShiftMate is used."

IF it is a Shimano 7speed hub, I have heard that their 8 speed shifters for internally geared hubs will work.
So the following should work:
Nexus Inter8 or Alfine8, and by extension, JTek 8 speed bar end or bar-top thumbshifter:
