o.k., what is it?
picked up a Specialized frame of some sort at the local co-op today.
i'll try and get some pictures up later. but:
lugged frame, but no tubing decals remain on the frame. in fact, the only decal that might identify a model on the frame is on the top tube and says "SE."
seat stays have raised "S" logo on top of each.
cable guides are brazed on on top of bottom bracket.
forward-facing rear droputs, stamped Shimano, derailer side is snapped off at adjusting screw.
one down tube shifter remains, highly polished with SunTour in block letters.
fork blades have "Special Series Cr-Mo Double Butted" decals. fork crown is cast with "S" inset on each side.
fork ends are Shimano.
headset is Specialized, 1" threaded.
front caliper is SunTour Superbe.
serial number is M359877.
so, any ideas?

I know that the 1986 Stumpy Sport had those pretty "S"'s on the stays so I'm wondering if you have an 86-ish roadie....Pics please! Sounds like you may have one of the EXCELLENT Japanese ones!!

hmmm. that seat cluster looks similar. but mine's a road bike.
i'll be able to get pics up tomorrow afternoon.
and it used to be red. now it's a bit pinkish.

a red, lugged Specialized roadbike with "special series cro-mo..." (that dates all the way back to the early 80's) is probably an Allez. More than likely an Allez SE. Pictures are good, as some of these were really nice bikes. Are you planning to fix the dropout?

looks like it's an 84 Allez SE.
and i'm definitely going to fix the dropout - it's just a question of whether i go back with a derailer type, or change both to track ends (the Paul Component Engineering ones look rather nice).

Looks like a lazy fixie guy attempted to "clean it up". They need to learn the use of a hacksaw. It is a nice bike, and I have seen replacement decals on eBay off and on.

no, it's definitely snapped. you can't tell from the picture, but the inside of the remains of the screw adjuster hole are stretched and bent towards the center line of the bike.

Maybe a dumb question, but are you turning the right direction to remove the fixed cup? It should be LH (reverse) thread. I've removed stubborn fixed cups by clamping the flats of the cup in a stout bench vise and using the whole frame as a lever. Be careful not to pull anything out of alignment.

i've not even tried to remove the bb cup yet... only thing i've done so far is take pictures and do research.
