Kool Stop thinline seem to be the go-to. Probably what I'll get (Salmon version).

Yep. Something about that pic makes me think those aren't thinline but hopefully it's just the pic and the actual product is correct. Those are the ones I'm ordering.

And we'll probably have to turn the front ones around backwards.

The pads pictured in the Amazon link look like the Eagle Claw. There's a customer photo lower down that also looks like an Eagle Claw. This looks like it should definitely be the thinline.

I had a Miyata 610 ('83?) that came with 27" and Shimano cantis. I went from the start with 700c, just tipped the pads down, let them wear in and made it a point to check them several times per pad life. Pretty easy. Swapped the calipers to identical (geometry-wise) Mafacs. Front went to centerpull later. (That bike saw several big crashes.) Yes, the pads would "drift" (I forget whether it was up or down" but correcting it wasn't hard. Brakes stayed excellent throughout.

My namesake Mooney has cantis positioned half way between 27" and 700c so I could run either. Started on the Mafacs. It got the Miyata's brakes because they were nicer.

Other than if you were to move the 700s to another bike, what would ever be a reason for switching back to 27s?

Sorry. I wasn't clear. I had the bike built with the bosses midway between 27" and 700c because I didn't know what wheels I might be using. I had 700c but the bike was built to an unusual requirement - that it be ride-able 12 months of the year in the lower 48 states. So, if I lived in back country Maine in 1979, that might mean big tires and fenders for snow. 1979, would I even be able to get 700c in big tires there?

Turned out the bike has always lived in 700c country. First 6 years were Santa Cruz and the Bay Area. JUst kept riding sewups. (And 700c was easy to get out there, even back then.) I had that bike made to do everything but race. (Went with horizontal dropouts just so it could go fix gear.) 38 years later, I put big tires and 3 mountain fix gear ratios on it to ride a mountainous part gravel tour. 700c but the first time I put on the fat tires it was designed for. And it loved them!

I kinda thought they looked like Eagle Claw too. Good catch on the pic.

Thx for the suggestion, I might try to find these. I like that the post is centered on the pad.

shoota My thinlines have arrived. They are much longer than I expected, but are indeed very thin as well.

My ‘85 Miyata Two-Ten came stock with 27” wheels. The only reason that might persuade me to change to 700c wheels might be tire availability. I’m sure that there are other valid reasons but for now, I’m not considering them. RE: the adjustability of the Dia-Compe 981, that oval shaped hole in the canti arm certainly allows for it. That option is not part of the design on the Dia-Compe 960s that on on my Two-Ten. (Perhaps another reason to stick with the 27”ers ). I did have more than a little bit of a struggle setting the pads properly and can’t imagine that having the oval adjustment slot would make it any easier. The convex/concave washer arrangement on both the 981 and the 960 does allow for toe-in. Since that has nothing to do with “upgrading” to 700c wheels (the OP’s topic) I’ll stop now .

How do they fit? And more importantly, stop?

polymorphself btw you have to use the "@" symbol, then the user's name comes up in a list as you type. I almost didn't see this. Or this feature is just broken.

Weird, I thought that’s what I did. I’ll test it next time.

My new old 700c wheelset is being laced as we speak so the new pads haven’t been mounted yet. I’m picking the wheels up tomorrow.

Oh cool, I’m interested to see your wheel build. I’m going to have to find a suitable set of wheels too.

An essentially NOS 1988 Miyata 615 passed through my hands last year and I kept the wheels. 700c 36/40h Araya rims with suzue sealed system hubs. They’re basically brand new but the spokes somehow were in pretty rough shape so I’m having them re-laced with double butted stainless steel spokes. I eventually will have a modern 700c wheelset built with a cassette and dyno hub but since I had these on hand I figured they’ll be a good in between until that time comes.

Ill post a pic here when I pick them up.
