I've been looking for a way to communicate with large groups (meetup groups) about location information during the ride. I've been using GoogleMyMaps quite a bit for planning rides, but I'm realizing its pretty good for real time updates too. Here's a map I've been working on for an upcoming ride, https://goo.gl/qXZwvK .
I experimented with using a cell phone to drop the blue pins on during a ride as the group leader. its nice because whoever opens the map sees their current location (Google displays with blue dot), last known position of leader, and the route. A sweep could also be given author rights and place a different color marker as well so the leader has some idea of how spread out everyone is.

Too many of the the other location apps are too complicated, require too much setup on each users phone etc or the location app has too many issues trying to protect user privacy.

Its not perfect but its pretty simple.
