Schwinn Middleweight

A few months ago I was going through my grandmother's barn and found my dad's old Schwinn from when he was a kid. It is in a "cave" made from old farm equipment, old lumber and discarded stuff. There is a men's bike and a girl's bike. Both are blue and appear from what I could see to be rusty and in need of attention. I'm planning on going down with a truck and getting the lumber (winter is coming and barn board furniture is hot stuff right now). I know pictures are worth a 1000 words but, based on my poor description, do they sound worthwhile to fix up? Here is what I remember; both are blue, have the 2 tone Schwinn seat, I think fenders, the blue sparkle grips are in good shape and about a 1/2" or so of barn filth. Old Schwinns are way out of my (limited) knowledge realm but, I would like to give them a shot if they aren't too far gone. I'm hoping to go down this week so maybe I can get some pictures.

I would bring them home, give them a quick clean up and post some pictures.

Schwinn middleweights were "the bomb" when I was a kid. The first middleweight introduced by Schwinn was the Corvette, introduced in 1954 when I was twelve. My dad is on the far left croutching in white socks (!) and pointing to the rear wheel in this photo of the Corvette introduction in Chicago. Frank V. (Frankie) Schwinn is behind the handlebars, and Ed Schwinn Sr. (Frankie's younger brother and Edward Jr. and Richard's dad) is in the bow tie on the far right.

He was a regional factory sales manager for the southeastern states. Basically, his job was to travel his territory (FL, GA, AL, MS, LA, SC, NC, TN, KY) visiting distributors and dealers, seeing if they needed anything or were having problems with components or timely deliveries, etc., take them out to lunch or dinner, and write up his visits for Ray Burch and Bill Chambers, his bosses. He was with Schwinn for thirty years until he died. The company was like an extended family back then and he loved working for them.

Stan, that really is a great picture. It's very neat to have history with a legendary company like Schwinn. Very cool!

Update on the bikes....
My uncle's have seen the show "American Pickers" and now they think the bikes are some rare find that is worth a TON of money. My family is rather skewed about certain things. This is going to take more convincing than I initially thought....
