Schwinn Voyageur

Not sure is an '88 counts as vintage, but this weekend I picked up a Schwinn Voyageur for $60. Freshened it up with new tubes, tires, seat and bar tape. Trued the wheels, adjusted the brakes, cleaned and lubed the frame. Before and after pics below.

Sure it counts. There are several of us in this forum who own and love 80s Voyageurs. I have an '88 and two '81 11.8s. Great bike. Enjoy!

Nice job fixing it up, but the Russian judge took point off for the kicksand.

Voyageurs are great do everthing bikes, anything from touring to cyclo cross.

Ha, I'm nowhere near the condition to do an organized trek, but that's the ultimate goal. The "baby-years" of parenting are behind my wife and I and as a result we've been getting back into hiking/bicycling/etc. The Voyageur will be my bike, now I just have to find a matching one for her.

Thanks for the link though, that Great Lakes tour looks right up my alley. I'm forwarding the link to my wife.

It's always that Russian judge that gets you.

I picked on up earlier this year too and I agree with ColonelJLloyd, I love mine. It's my commuter and "grocery getter" with full blown rack, fenders, panniers, etc. It really is one hell of a comfortable ride. Enjoy it!

Don't I know it. Prices for older road bikes, Schwinn in particular, are absurd in this area.

To the OP: you got one heckuva deal! Ride it well. I just finished building up the same year (and color) Voyageur frameset, and took it out on the requisite shakedown cruise last night. Very supple ride, the frame is definitely forgiving.

Keep an eye on Nashbar. They often have special promotional sales discounts and deals on front and rear racks, fenders (SKS for as little as $20...in black...silver would look better), bottle cages (as you know, your bike takes 3), frame pumps, panniers, etc. Just switched from a Schwinn to a Raleigh touring bike, but only because I wanted a larger frame size.

Nice looking bikes. I have a black rear rack. I just took it off for the clean-up and didn't re-install for the "after" photos. I'll probably take the rest of the summer getting it dialed in ride-wise and then turn my attention to accessories over the winter. The remainder of this year's bike budget will be reserved for finding a similar bike for my wife.

BTW, nice sub-forum you've got here. Seems to be a bit more positive than some of it's siblings.

Thanks. Yes, this is Honjo's "hammered" fender. It's a copy of an old French design. They make them in this pattern and in smooth. Velo Orange makes their own hammered style, but with a honeycomb shaped indent instead of Honjo's square.

To the OP: Good find, it's hard to come by old touring bikes for a reasonable amount of money.
