Ostrich Handlebar Bags are Terrible

Hello,

I have an Ostrich handle bar bag I bought just a year or so ago. It doesnt get daily use but I have taken it on several long day rides and also two, week long trips. I originally bought the bag at Velo Orange but they seem to think that I didn't and so wont help me out. I can't find the email to see where I bought it but I had thought it was VO.

Since VO wont help me I would like to contact Ostrich directly since it seems the material of my bag is defective. Does anyone know how to contact them in Japan? I cant find any information on the company itself.

Most of the bag looks brand new.

But anyplace where the bag came in contact with just about anything has worn through. The hole on the bottom caused by the plastic stiffener is huge and things fall out of it all the time now.

My previous Carradice handlebar bag is made of the same cotton duck material but has been though a year long tour of Asia and is still going strong. This Ostrich bag was far more expensive and has been a big dissapointment.

Swift Industries.. their stuff is awesome. I have a Ozette Rando bag and I love love love it! It seems pretty sturdy and durable and I have put it through some usage, mostly commuting.
As far as Ostrich you might try and reach out to Merry Sales as I believe they are the/a distributor and might have better contacts?

I'd call it manufacturer's defect. Like Ostrich got a bad batch of fabric.

Is is waxed like Carradice bags?

Live in Japan and have to say Ostrich is not a good brand. It's a low price brand here. But you should contact them by email and in easy short English. They may replace it.

It does look like defective fabric. I have the same bag, and have had no similar problems. If V/O won't help, try one of the other retailers, and see if they'll help you contact Ostrich.

https://store.biketouringnews.com/os...104-rando-bag/ carries it.

I don't think so but that shouldn't effect the durability, just the waterproofing.

Is the bag 100% cotton? If so I wonder why, since there has been far better more durable materials for some time available and also, cotton in itself isn't that durable a material.
There's polycotton, which is far superior to pure cotton in every way and is also waxable. And of course there is Cordura which is essentially indestructible, but possible not waxable as cordura fabrics usually use a polyurethane coating.

There are many threads with long debates about the merrits of different materials for bag making. This is not one of them. Cotton duck is a long tested and proven material and I have many other bags that are made of it and have proven extremely durable. This is not one of them.

You may have bought it from Soma Fabrications. They carry that bag.

Damn shame. That was a good looking bag. One of the best, IMO.

hi there sir young Zepp. Any luck with contacting them?
Given all your experience with your other bags, this really does look like its pretty crap material.

Any chance storage might have contributed to the problem? I've got ruined stuff in my damp basement. mold? particularly with cotton.

I think it's been many years since VO stopped carrying Ostrich bags.

I was pretty happy with it until the holes appeared. Except for the opening facing the wrong way which was annoying but I also knew about it before I bought the bag.

Its possible but the bag has always been stored with all of my other bicycle bags from carradice which are made of the same material and have 15,000-20,000 miles on them without any such issues. They are also nearly 10 years old now!
