who are you?
IWhat's more, I agree with you -- Timezone
I had a serious watch zone for a about 10 years, but after the 12 step program, my collection is down to a conservative number, by Timezone standards, that is. Therefore, I am not going to feed the habit by posting watch pics, although, my Zodiac Super Sea Wolf (1000m, which preceded the Sea Dweller) is one serous chunk of steel.

Not exactly. Their appearance is from before they realized that you could make frame tubes in shapes other than round. And then Colnago did the monocoque thing and the rest is history.
The uber-aero carbon TT frames you see now, for instance, are arguably more function-driven than anything with plain round tubes.

Mine wasn't a mishap. I've done it before, and I'll do it again.
It wasn't me who talked about grammar and subtext in the use of common vernacular on an forum. Then again, if the only time you've heard the word 'dawg' used in a sentence is while watching American Idol, it probably demonstrates your sense of entitlement and privilege along with your assumption (based on your statements) to my education based on the fact that you think that you were trying to show how superior you were to me because I used the word. I'm not even going to begin to talk about how you feel about a particular demographic then.
At least I used 'dawg' it in a sentence correctly. Though I do apologize for using the the word 'dawg' and referring to you.
Main Entry: dawg
Part of Speech: n
Definition: a term of address for a close acquaintance or friend
Example: What's up, dawg?
You can go back to hand-wringing and debating the slight differences of your 'race' bikes, and I'll go back to reading Orwell.
Peace out.

bring thing thread back on topic, i believe these two posts pretty much cover it.
Lets think about it for a second.
You don't race bikes. You don't really know how a race bike should handle. You just go tool around on different bikes and come home saying "cool that was different. I can't say if it's a good or bad difference, but it just is."
You know you could just rent/test ride bikes and do that right? You didn't have to buy them all and then complain.
On the note of globalization and the bike market. Are you serious?
No offense dawg, but America isn't the production powerhouse it once was.

Then:
A) Don't buy the 4k carbon frames.
B) Buy a USA made custom frame.
C) Both A & B.
I currently own 3 frames.
1) CAAD9 Road bike. Material: Al.(My race bike)
2) Ti Cycles Custom Steel Cross frame. Got it in a trade and it works for me.
3) 84 Trek 760 Steel.
All three were handmade in the US.
I didn't do that by choice, but I love all three of the frames.

You make up for it with the idiotic content of your posts and threads.
By the way, my Fly Ti Motobecane is a VERY high quality Taiwan sourced Ti frame that is comparable with the MUCH more expensive Ti frames from domestic builders.

so how comes carbon frames are so much more common than Ti frames? Since they aren't cheaper than Ti and Ti is so much better apparently. you have to compete on price or quality. and if carbon is neither, i'm lost. where am i?

i'm a very non consumeristic bike purchaser. i only got carbon this year. so glad i did. i will buy a Ti in the future so i will have a stable of steel, carbon, and Ti eventually. I have no desire to complete the set with aluminium despite all the efforts of CAAD 9 zealots on BF.

Al fills a different niche in the lineup.
Easier and cheaper to make and sell.
I have a 9 because I'm on a huge budget and need a good race bike that's inexpensive to replace when it breaks. That was the major motivator in my decision to get a 9, I could afford a mid range carbon bike, but could I pay the money to replace the frame in a crash?
Probably not without using a full months worth of pay that's better used on books or paying back student loans.

Point 1.
Carbon gives best stiffness to weight ratio. Carbon frames are cheap to make. But you are paying for the best stiffness:weight ratio, not the cost to design, manufacture, market the frames.
Point 2.
Aren't there a ton of bikes on the streets of Shanghai? I'm guessing they're locally made steel framed bikes. So far east can make cheap steel bikes, and cheap carbon bikes. But in the west, carbon is the fashionable choice right now.

Raising the Abyss
I like my steel, Ti and Al, but kind of felt like I was missing out on the carbon craze. The retrogrouch in me caved a bit this spring and I and bought my 1st all carbon frame.
I liked it A LOT more than I thought I would, but to get 4 is a bit overkill, no? Yeah, not all carbon frames are the same, but I can't believe you bought 4 CF bikes before getting curious about other frame materials.
