Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Picture of a bike you built up from a frame

Post a picture and details of a bike you built up from a frame. Any type, road, C&V, cyclocross or commuter. As long as it started as a frame only. Include info as to why you choose the parts you did.

My latest... A Cannondale CAAD8. My "workhorse" build. Mostly SRAM Rival, Force cranks left over from my tri bike, and American Classic Hurricane wheels.

And I've replaced enough parts from stock that I think this one counts now too. SRAM Force with TT shifters, Zipp cockpit, Quarq/SRAM cranks. Picked those parts because they build a comfy, fast bike.

1980 Lotus Legend frame
shimano 105 gruppo
ultegra cassette
cheap nashbar wheels

had it set up as a fixed gear, got a great deal on the components/wheels so i went for the conversion.

planned upgrades:
pedals
headset
fork?
stem (hoping to go threadless if possible)

Tarmac SL2 team frame: Improved stiffness and geometry over my Tarmac SL that it replaced
Reynolds DV46T race wheels: Wanted medium-deep & light carbon wheels for racing. I got them used for relatively cheap.
SRAM Red shifters & derailers: I like SRAM
Zero Gravity Ti brakes: I'm a weight weenie
Quarq CinQo power meter: cause I'm a NERD (note I now have the s-works version).
Speedplay Zero Ti pedals: I like speedplays, and again I'm a weight weenie (but not enought o get nanograms)
KMC K10SL gold chain: bling bling
NCNC Ti skewers: weight weenie + bling bling
Garmin Edge 705: head unit for power meter
Fizik Microtex bars tape: cause it rocks
Fizik Arione CX Carbon: light and comfortable

I wanted to get the bars/stem/post as a "set"
3T ARX Team stem: Wanted a -17D stem
3T Ergosum Team bars: Liked the bend profile
3T Doric Ltd post: Wanted a zero-setback post

and I like to focus on little details:
Nokon cables: fully sealed, tight routing
Arundel Dave-O cages: simply the best
Extralite top cap:

And on a sad note... I was reminded that I had built my Pinarello too... the frame was broken in a race crash. I still have it, though--one of these days I'll send it off to Calfee and resurrect it.

'98? Pinarello Asolo frame and fork
Veloce 9spd group
Mavic MA2 rims
Campagnolo seatpost
Flite saddle
Deda bar
Ambrosio stem now, a 3ttt in the photo
Got this NOS frame at a very good price and tried to build it as Italian as possible. Couldn't find Campagnolo 32 h box section rims but I like the Mavics too.

In its latest iteration:

The build list:

Frame -- Scattante Ti by Lynskey, Size M
Fork -- Alpha Q CS10
Headset -- Chris King
Seatpost -- Kalloy 31.6 x 350mm
Crank -- Shimano Dura Ace
Bottom Bracket -- Shimano Dura Ace
Brake Set -- TRP 920
STI shifters -- SRAM Rival
Front Derailleur -- SRAM Rival
Rear Derailleur -- SRAM Rival
Cassette -- SRAM Rival 11|28
Chain -- KMC X10SL
Pedals -- Shimano
Spacers -- Carbon
Stem -- 3T ARX Team 110mm
Handlebar -- 3T Ergonova Pro 44cm
Handlebar Tape -- Stella Azurra
Cables -- Dura Ace
Housing -- Dura Ace
Saddle -- Specialized Toupe
Bottle cages -- Tacx Tao
Tires -- Michelin Krylion Carbon
Tubes -- Vittoria
Wheelset -- Easton Circuit
Skewers -- Easton

Got the frame for two reasons: the geometry looked like it would work well and there was a great sale at the time. All the parts were chosen to be durable first, but I also tried to save some weight where I could. The total build came in just under 18 lbs, but I hope to get it under 16.5 lbs with a few upcoming changes.

Original build: '05-06 model year Time VXS, with '07 Campy Record groupset, Record hubs/Mavic Open Pros, Time bottle cages, Sigma comp, Spec. Toupe saddle, Speedplay Zero pedals. Believe it or not, everything except the computer, saddle and pedals came from Performance Bike.

Changes since include new saddle(s) (now on a Regal), Arundel bottle cages, Garmin Edge 705, Conti GP4000 tires. I alternate the Open Pros with Easton EA90 Aero wheels.

Very satisfied with it- actually cured upgrade fever. I have no burning desire for a new bike, though if this one died in a fire, I'd know what I would get next.

This is an older Eddy Merckx Titanium AX that I built up from a frame. Great bike, but was a little small for me.

It took skilled and steady hands (my two left ones) to create something from this pile of junk

and come up with this wonderful steed

Dura Ace 7800 FD, RD, brifters
SLK Mega Exo Crank
Thomson stem
Easton EC90 X fork
Easton EC90 handlebar
Mavic Open Pro with Dura Ace hubs
Pedalforce CX1 frame
Ritchey WCS seatpost

Oh, and most important part, a good luck sticker picturing a frog, which my daughter stuck right underneath the triangle of top tube and seat tube the day I had finished the build

I'd have to post most of the bikes I've owned, but I'll just post the most "modern" of them

Started off with the first gen 8s Ergo Record from a friend, and it just went on from there.
And I painted it, too. The frame looked kinda' tired when I bought it.
Chorus crank, RD & front hub. Record Ergo, rear hub, seatpost & cassette. Athena FD & brakes.
C-Record headset, Campy aero bottle (need a match)
