Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why?

Why do I persist with road cycling? Two things. The endorphins (I'm addicted). And the massive stupidity in the sport, which provides persistent and ongoing comic relief.

And it does occur to me that there is more unmitigated dooshbaggery in this sport than in any other hobby or past time on the friggin planet. Particularly in amateur bicycle racing. The flip side is there is also some phenomenal camaraderie. It's complicated.

but sadly not the right endorphins.

if pcad was really addicted to endorphins he would be on the trainer all the time doing intervals.

if there's anything to the research in this article https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/0...-runners-high/ they may well be the right "endorphins".

Golf is close though pcad - very close - everyone who buys a Nike One hat thinks they are Tiger.
And I don't understand the dooshbaggery in this sport - I can be a dick but my heart is in the right place and am always there to help and never put people's stuff down or look down on others but so many do.

I do it because I hate myself so I must torture myself as often as possible. That's also why I come here.

If cycling equaled dooshbaggery around here, I never would have gotten into it.

This belongs in the confession thread but then again it comes with the sport. People with low threshold for pain won't get far unless they have godlike talent.

Cycling = Stupid. The dooshbaggery is only a fringe benefit, but of course, there are others, or nobody would be here.
