Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Stung by Bee

On today's morning ride, a bee with a size of a quarter, stung me on my upper lip. Aside from the sharp pain for the first half hour, and non-stop numbing sensation, should I be worried? or do anything right now besides applying ice? Thanks!

If you haven't keeled over with a swollen throat and tongue yet, you're probably fine. That being said, this is NOT the place to get Mx advice.

if you were allergic, you'd probably of had a terrible reaction already. Ice it to keep the swelling down and you should be fine in a day or so.

Are you POSITIVE that it wasn't a wasp the used its ovipositor to lay eggs in your face? I guess you'll find out in a few days when the larva start burrowing out of your lip.

+1. Cant figure it out. Went to a Class re-union and several of the aging cheerleader crew had them. Looked like they sucked on a hot tail pipe and covered it with the brightest lipsticks made.

If it was the size of a quarter, it was probably a bumblebee. I've only ever been stung by yellowjackets, paper wasps, and hornets. (I've run fast enough to only be stung once, each time!) I have had a bumblebee land on the back of my neck, which was a nasty surprise when I reached back to scratch... Bees keep their distance from me, for some reason.

Fyi - Honeybees have a barbed stinger and when the sting they leave the venom sac attached which keep pumping venom into you. You can take your fingernail or a credit card to remove the stinger and sac before all the venom is pumped. They only sting once since they'll die after. Wasps, yellow jackets, bumble bees, etc. can sting multiple times, don't have a barbed stinger and won't die after stinging. If it was the size of a quarter, sounds like a bumble bee. Apply ice and maybe some benadryl if a minor reaction. Anything more, call your doc.

^^^^This. I had that exact reaction last year on a ride and had to be taken by ambulance. I could barely speak because of my swollen tongue and half my face looked like elephant man. The reaction was within just a few minutes of being stung on the face, and I've been stung lots before with zero reaction, so you never know. Gotta take the epi-pen now on all rides.

Bottom line.....you'd have known if there was a problem almost right away.
