Cyclist causes crash, no, wait...

So on FB the other day, there was posted by a major news network local affiliate a story of a school bus run off the road.

The headline and details were rather sensational, to the effect of: Cyclist Causes School Bus Accident, further reporting that the bus had to swerve off the road to avoid the cyclist.

Well, no: as it turns out the bus full of kids ended up in a ditch because the bus had to avoid a motorist in the oncoming lane, making an unsafe pass around a cyclist.

Woops.

By the time it hit my feed, the story and headline had already been updated. Of note, it was still mentioned that the offending car doing the unsafe pass was passing a cyclist, but there was nothing in the story which pointed blame at the driver like the original story blamed the cyclist, it didn't even mention that the car was technically doing an unsafe pass.

This has nothing to do with the OP other than location location location, but....

The sidewalks to nowhere are bad enough.
But just what are the paint-only pork chops islands supposed to be for?

Must have been hard for the car to see the bus around the cyclist.

They thought the had the story right, at least in their minds, and thought better of it after all the cyclist started raining on their heads.

It doesn't matter what else is on the road; if there's a cyclist, you have to pass it. I mean, come on. Cyclist. Pass. There are no other considerations. Doesn't even matter if the cyclist is doing over the speed limit and there's an oncoming bus, you still have to pass it.

Everyday there are collisions everywhere especially on highways where cyclists are not allowed. So when a cyclist is spotted somewhere near the vicinity of the motor-vehicle collision, it must be the cause of the incidence because blaming another one on a motorist is getting tiresome.

In this day and age of Internet-dominated news and social media, getting the story out there first often trumps accuracy. I have been seeing it more and more over the years.

The stupid driver should have been the one to end up in the ditch. Instead of the school bus.
